Doesn't petrol degrade when stored over time anyway... hence the reason why Lawnmowers refuse to start come summer on petrol stored all winter? I thought this was due to Octane breakdown.

Similarly - depending on how long the SUL supply is stored for in Jersey... would be surprised if 98 RON was actually stil 98RON by time OP buys it anyway.
 
LOL at people in this thread seemingly having no idea about engine mapping,
Compression ratios and knock sensor and generally not having one single clue when saying thing like OH MY BIKE is 12:1 and I dont need SUL....

Sigh.

To balance it out my car has a fairly sane compression ratio by most standards at 10.4:1 but in the book pretty much says," Run it on 97" rather than the usual "oh 95 will be fine but 97 is better" i've seen in every other car manual i've opened. Does this mean that every 10.4:1 or Comp ratio or higher car MUST have 97? no. Its a bit more varied than that isnt it.

Does it run better on 97 or above in comparison to 95.

This is part of the problem apparantly, UL gets used a lot more over here, and shipments could be less costly if the SUL tanks were stocked with UL so less shipments would be needed.
What they dont understand is it is not a few customers using lots of SUL to make the 7% of sales it is a lot of customers using it a reasonable amount, so it is affecting more people than they thought.

It is certainly not running down to near 95 ron as my car runs quite nicely on it and wouldnt if near 95, i heard it on the rollers with 95 mistakenly put in.

S2000's don't hate 95 at all, I ran mine on it primarily for a year, engine is a little more noisy due to knock but that's it.

SUL gives you slightly better economy and better pick up, but you won't destroy the engine running it on 95 :/

Presumably 95 RON also degrades if there isn't great demand for petrol over there...

I still reckon my original suggestion of buying barrels of Sunoco could be worth a shot. Anglo American Oil are the main lot in the UK I've heard of, and they do it from 99RON upto the short shelf life 109RON stuff. Have one bloke buy in bulk, and then distribute it around.

Yes they play a big part in it, its them you have to sign up to to take part. They came out and said they would struggle to attract competitors over if the move went ahead.

It would change a lot about the event, to the point where people just wouldn't bother.

The fuel company are coming out with a statement early next week to try and sort it out.

We will see.
 
Last 3 tanks I have ran normal 95RON. No perceived difference really, as expected in the cold. MPG has dropped by 1 MPG but this is probably as much due to the weather. HIgher octane is more critical on hotter days

I guess I should see how it runs on higher octane again before making this conclusive.
