Im just starting out as a contractor, after being made redudant last week ive managed to secure a temp contract hoping to stay though.

anyone recommend an umbrella company, i start monday so need to work fast. I will eventually set up a LTD company but at the minute ive got enough to get my head round.

thanks

I think Parasol might give better rates.

I know that some clients I have worked with in the past have preferred supplier lists for Umbrella companies that contractors can use. Parasol wasn't on the list so the contractor actually BD'd them into the client!

Don't forget the referral bonus! ;)

I used Parasol before I went Ltd Co. and they were fine, never had any problems with them.

If you know someone who's contracting at whichever company you are thinking to go with... if you put their name on the sign up form you can get vouchers...

I know Giant do a referral scheme - definitely with the recruitment companies that they work with - so I don't see why they wouldn't do it with their contractors, you can put my name down if you like ;)

"Sorry we don't have anyone down as this so called 'BB x' do you have any more information?"

:p

I used to use GIANT. They are fantastic :)

Were they? If I was to be in the same situation again, I would start up my own LTD company instead of using giant or similar. I also felt they were a bit rude on the phone when I called up to cancel with them telling me I couldn't be employed by the same place.

I use Network One and so do most of the contractors in my team.

Have to say their pretty good, HR department is 100x better than the company I work at :D

I used NASA for 2.5 years, they charge £10 a week and offered prompt and reliable service the whole time.

That and the name :D

Edit*
They USED to be £10 a week, business must be good :p

Just set up a ltd company, takes 2 mins on company houses and the banking can be done easily as well.

After that its just find an accountant.

Can anyone explain why one would have to join an umbrella company to contract for another?
Surely just being paid as a sole trader offering a service would be exactly the same but without the fees?

Surely that depends on how long the OP is going to contract for. If it is just for a short time, it really isn't worth the effort and cost. IMO it's worth starting out under an umbrella until you decide contracting is for you then move over to Ltd Co.
