Hey,
First time going for a proper overclock.
I've taken my Intel i7 920 2.66Ghz up to 3.8Ghz and I've got it stable and doing a prime95 it dances between 68-72*C

I'm wondering if this is an all right temp and if i should go for squeezing some more out of it?

Any response would be much appreciated

I dont think that is too bad, I would say 75-80 would be too high.

What cooler do you have? Can you upgrade it?

According to specs of your intel chip, it has a tcase max of 67.8c. However, you can add 10-15c to that when taking into account the t-junction temps that "core temp" report.
I generally aim for temps of 65-70c if we re talking about a 24/7 Load cycle. keep an eye on your volts to. Imagine the general rule is, keep vcore under 1.4. Lower the better!

Im learning this stuff myself at the moment so please someone correct me if im mistaken.

72c is fine on an i7 920, as for going higher. 4.0ghz is practically a given on a DO stepping 920, 4.2 with a bit of tweaking and the right cooling.

I have a i7 960 which overclock from 4.2ghz to 4.3ghz this week in prime 95 my temps round 75c - 80c which high but when playing games mmo ect iv never seen my temps higher than 60c prime 95 pushs your cpu more than any game will so i wouldnt worrie about your temps in Prime 72c is ok.

Am using corsair h100i cooler.

Hey
@snips86x:
I have the ASUS Triton 81, I know it's nothing special, I'm pretty sure it was on deal when I got the CPU. I wasn't really wanting to replace anything, just get the most out of what I have.
@Rubicant:
Thanks for the info :) I'm in the process of lowering my my voltage to see where it cuts out, but I felt I should ask around and see if it's work cranking up a bit before finding some nice long term settings.
@setter:
Hmm might have to give another wee go to turning up then but concerns about my cooling, might go for pulling the fans off and giving it a good clean, I have a feeling the fins might be clogged :/
@OLDPHART:
*high five for the 920 bro*
as I said above I've got the ASUS Triton 81.
@Kyle1987:
Nice cooler, was looking at that for my next build, how're you finding it? My concern about high temps under max loads is because I do a lot of game development and have found that to stress the system at times and I don't want a temp which could potentially cause me to lose work & my CPU :P

Thanks for the great advice guys, it's been really helpful :D

When I first got the H100i by Corsair I was a bit worried because a lot people have had faults with there h100i things like fans stay at 100% and pump not working right etc. Corsair release a firmware 1.4 update but that seem to mess thing up even more but I still went ahead and get one tho.

In the Corsair link software that you download to control the pump and funs my firmware said 1.5 and I have head no problems at all with then pump works fine the standed fans work in built in controller all good :).

But the standed fans are like there new SP120 performance ones but cheaper version they make slight rattle and noisy as hell over 1500rpm but I have swapped out then for to bitfenix fans for now in till my sp120 quiet edition arrives and what does suck tho is that only the fans that come with the h100i works in the pumps built in fan controller so any other fans wont work and then you will have to connect to the motherboard or as I have done to your own fan controller not ever there own sp120 that sell work just the ones in box.

But good cooler I really like it keeps my i7 960 cool @ 4.3ghz.

Regards
Kyle

Right, you see this is really good to hear, would you say that the noise level problems the h100 has at high loads have been fixed by the replacement of the fans?
Has the pump sound ever been noticeable/annoying?

I have not had any problems at all wih my h100i, my pump is quiet and the link software works fine when i plug the h100i fans in. The only problem is the h100i fans sp120l i think they called make a kind of rattle noise round 1000 to 1800 rpm and does my head in so gona swap them out for the proper sp120 quiet editions fans.

I am controlling pump and fans with my bitfenix recon controller now :)
