any tips on where I can get a hold of lots of broken hard drives?

This is probably the sort of thing that worries some people about buying second hand cars - has some loon been doing something daft like trying to glue magnets to the inside of the gearbox?

"Please mister I want some magnets to clamp around my fuel lines to arrange all the atoms in the fuel the right way so I can get some more powah?"

Nah, stick them to your front bumper. Your car will be pulled along by the one in front giving a guaranteed 30% drop in fuel consumption when driving in traffic.

Magnets on drain plugs are quite common, shavings off gears stick to the magnet as they float past in the oil, much better than damaging the internals of your box / engine!

bit if they're broken, then surely the magnets will be broken too?

Exactly, because the only possible way an HDD can fail is if the magnets break.

This is such a weird thread. Of all the things that you could do to maintain your (I presume) old 1.6 golf, and you want to buy some HDDs, open them up, get the magnets out, and dot them around your car.

TBH just wrap a few coils of wire around your gearbox and plug into your alternator. Instant on electromagnet when the engine's started - which is when you need it ;)

I figure, its not worth my time doing this. I ordered a pack of neodym magnets from ebay (hong kong) for around a fiver. I'll research some high temp glue suitable for using inside the gear oil pan. Then just glue the magnet onto the plug, maybe filter.

I realsied now that the engine sump probably doesn't need any magnets, but the gear box definately does.

long service interval 100K miles + no filter is probably a bad recipe.

Is this for real?

Honestly, don't bother. I'm sure if VW thought that magnets were required, they would have glued them all over the place before it left the factory.

Plenty of oil sump and gearbox drain plugs available off the shelf if you want to capture ferrous materials, the gears for example like to shed particles.

I stuck magnets to my fuel tank and got 10 more MPG, true story.

Seems to be needed in China based on the fuel quality over there!
