Cheapest short term insurance?

Ive agreed a price for my car with a buyer but it needs 2 tyres and an MOT and is currently SORN.

Whats the cheapest way to insure it to get it to my garage?

Short term insurance quotes are at least £50. A lot of people talk about the free 7 day driveaway with a HPI check but their website doesnt seem to mention that so maybe its stopped. The other option is maybe just ask my wife to phone her insurance company to add it on for a week.

Any thoughts folks?

Thanks

Why wouldn't he be able to get insurance? :/

If it's just for a day, then use DayInsure or similar.

No valid MOT.

Short term insurance won't get you on the MID anyway.

Probably worth reading the different insurer's policy booklets on what they require.

Scanning that, there doesn't seem to be such a condition. I guess it's fine then.

How do you suggest that people drive the car to an MOT station to get a car tested if it's run out?

You can tax a car using temporary insurance, as long as the tax comes into effect on the same day as the temporary insurance. However, I believe that it's at the PO's discretion - I've had no problems before.

Find an insurer that will cover it. Not all will.

Direct Line for example,

You and any person who is covered by this policy must:
make sure your car is roadworthy;
• take all reasonable steps to protect your car and its contents
from loss or damage;
• make sure you keep property left in an open or convertible car
in a locked boot or locked glove compartment; and
• allow us to examine your car at any reasonable time if we ask you.

So by that logic, does that mean that your insurance is invalid the second your MOT expires? So someone storing a car on their driveway (with tax remaining and insured, abiding by current laws) whilst working on the car for an MOT re-test could be liable for prosecution for no insurance?

MOT test isn't the measure as to whether something is roadworthy (but I bet an insurer will use it against you).

The OP however clearly states it needs 2 new tyres. It isn't roadworthy.

I should have phrased it as, it isn't in an MOT passable state.

Also you aren't driving it if your car is on the driveway.

Again, how do you suggest the vehicle is taken to a registered MOT station, or a garage to get said tyres fitted?

The car can be insured to get it to an MOT station for a pre-booked MOT. Then it can be taken to be taxed - Temporary insurance covers this :)

Also you aren't driving it if your car is on the driveway.

The cat still needs to be insured if it has Tax remaining, whether it is being driven or not.

Phone up Direct Line and ask. I bet they won't cover it.

DayInsure might, but others may not.

Yes but insurance companies aren't completely unreasonable. However, if you somehow crash into a third party and they investigate, you think they will make a payout for your car?

I would imagine that they WOULD cover it, in the instance that the car is being driven to a pre-booked MOT. The key word here is pre-booked.

I'd hope that if you were driving to an MOT test, you'd be very careful :p However I see your point. However, there is no other way (short of getting it picked up on a trailer/flatbed or towed) to drive a car to an MOT test if it does not have one. The onus is on the vehicle owner to plan ahead accordingly, this is why you can MOT a car up to a month ahead and still retain the certificate date, effectively giving you 13 month's MOT.

Um, the car needs 2 tyres but will probably pass without changing them but I told the buyer that I’d changes them in the agreed price

I figured if I can get an emailed cover note then I can insure the car of the printed copy.

The old insurance expired in December so I’m thinking the wifes insurance might be the best best

Oh ok. Misinterpreted what you said then. I guess the car is roadworthy.

No but if it was stolen they'd payout accordingly as it's worth bugger all.

You still get the free 7 day insurance by the way. Used it last week.

When I was broke once I took out a policy and cancelled within the 14 days. It cost me the £22 deposit and £20 admin fee. Still a lot cheaper than the temporary insurance policies I was quoted.

I probably wouldn't advise it openly as it may be deemed as fraud.
