Just wondering if this has happened to anyone else...

I have had an e-mail supposedly from Paypal informing me that my account will be limited until an issue is resolved with them.

When I log into my account and go to the Resolution Centre, it requires for me to send photo ID and proof of address

Does anyone know if this is legit or some sort of scam?

Cheers

Did you login to PayPal by clicking on a link in that email?

IF SO CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD RIGHT AWAY, YOU HAVE BEEN SCAMMED.

I had this happen late last year, it seems to be something of an automated security thing..

One of the options that you should be given, is to receive an automated call from their system, it gives you a code that you type in, and that should be enough.

mine went limited as i hadn't gave them full bank details and i'd spent over a certain amount, £2000 i think, might have just been under, but was told same, need proof of account etc or wait 6 months or something before i could use service again, strange really when it's paid same day from bank as well :)

ah well there loss

Paypal states a yearly income limit of £1700 to prevent fraud. However, it's only half true because the £1700 is actually a LIFETIME limit, not yearly! I had the OP's email in 2009, been a member of Paypal since 2001, so £1700 in sales over 8 years at that point isn't really fraud is it? Sell a couple of computers and loads of clothes over 8 years and it's easy to hit that amount. Like with the OP, my account became limited and I had to send in more details than the bloody passport office! Took about 5 weeks for my account to revert back to normal. The one thing I'm not sure of though is whether I'm subject to another £1700 cap in the future?

I had this happen to me when my email used to be with MSN/Hotmail.

Apparently someone had hacked my email even though I'd closed the account for another email provider. Long story short, paypal made me contact an american lawyer who was representing the NFL and NBA because the person who had hacked my account was selling fake jersey's on eBay in Asia.

About two months of emails back and forth later, I wanted to counter sue and haven't heard back since.

Cannot see that option anywhere, any idea where it should be?

Good man, I was worried for a moment!

What does your PP acct say if you login normally? Any messages etc?

At the top of the page is this message:

Your account access is limited. Learn how to remove this limitation

When I click that I have the option to resolve the problem by either uploading or faxing photo ID and proof address.

Really annoying!

It might be legit basic paypal counts can only have so much money in/out before you need to provide proof of id.
you can opt to do it early if you want.

It's probably enforced on them by law like with banks to stop money laundering

Heres the limits for an unverified account
Sending Limit per year £1,900.00 GBP
Withdrawal limit per month £500.00 GBP
Withdrawal limit per year £650.00 GBP
Receiving limit per yearHelp £1,900.00 GBP

Anyway never use links in emails, always go to the website you know
If you suspect you went over one of those limits the email is likely to be legit.

You can check in your account after you login near the top left section of the screen theres a link called "limits" next to where it says your account type on that page it shows how much of each limit you have used and when the limit resets for your account
