***The Official Sony Xperia Z Thread ***

Android has come a long way since its appearance release a few years ago. I remember buying the T Mobile G2 and there weren't many apps on the fledgling OS then but now there's an abundance of apps and I don't think "Damn I wish I really had that app or that game because sooner rather than later they get released on Android!

I'm sure that once Windows 8 gathers momentum the same can be said for that

It depends entirely on what apps you use and what apps you want. It's possible that you'd get a near identical experience on both platforms, but it's also possible that wouldn't be the case.

I'm coming from having had every iPhone alongside almost every top end Android phone for the past 3 years or so. :p

I would imagine that will be the case, especially with how many units Nokia have shifted. I totally under-estimated how few apps there would be, even 3-4 months after WP8 release.

I think WP is another generation away from being a proper force, and that's only if developers get on board. Read lots of stories of developers staying away from WP for one reason or another.

maybe but i never had a problem finding an app really.. :o and all of them seem to work fine so im not really sure what ios does that android can't do as the apps just work lol

Yup the apps are no longer a concern. Sure the apps might be a bit better polished than the android alternatives but as grudas has said the majority of android apps work perfectly well and look great. More and more apps are being updated to follow the stock android template so everything feels a bit more unified throughout. Have never had any real problems with apps on my S and I have tried hundreds if not thousands out!

This taken straight from XDA

"I just spoke to xiFIL, and worst fears have come true, his Vodafone store received batches of the Z today, they took out a few devices where the boxes got damaged in transit and tested them to make sure they work,

The screens on the final unit look washed out like the demo units, to top this off he tried several devices, all of them looked like the demo units with washed out colours, there is no production unit and demo unit, this is what you will get nothing else, all hope was lost today
"

That's the final nail in the coffin for me.

Straight to Rainforest and cancel the pre order :(

Knew that was the case from the moment the xperia Z etc. were announced! :p

No doubt the fanboys over on XDA, especially the guy who started the "display" thread will still deny the washed out colours and poor viewing angles

Deep down I knew as well. God knows why I pre ordered it

There's 51 pages of discussion on XDA, it makes for fun reading :p

meh, can't even be assed to read that thread, the amount of people who thought the screen looked better than the DNA, oppo 5 etc. was unbelievable :o XDA is such an awful forum! Only reason I check it is cause you find good android apps listed there and the one s sub-forum is more lively than other places :p :(

Lol, why are people making out the phone is now absolutely useless? I checked to see the Z in store and I have to say I was impressed and found the screen to be generally damn nice.. Shock horror I found it nicer then my S3 but may that's because it's all new and a change. I'll reserve my full judgment until I receive the phone though.

HTC for me is not an option as sense is horrid, HTC are animals lol

It's not useless, it's just disappointing.

A washed out screen with naff viewing angles is not something you should expect these days.

The fact the rest of the phone is nice makes it even more annoying.

A bad screen is an annoying let down to an otherwise good product.

All is not lost though, Sony have already released the kernal sources so it shouldn't take too long for developers to really get to grips with it and vastly improve the colours. So it's not as much of a major negative as is being made out if your tech savvy and can root.

Samsung - design
Sony - screen/camera
HTC - quantity over quality and not releasing a great phone in other markets

If only someone could make a phone with the design of the Xperia Z, power and software of the GS3/4 and the alleged camera of the One.....

One one of the XDA threads, someone posted some photos, and the screen looked decent to me, but it was criticised by everyone for being washed out. If that is supposedly bad, then I don't see a huge problem. Going to try and check one out in the flesh next week, and unless it's horrendously off-putting, I can't see it being a deal-breaker.

As for the camera, my currently Lumia 920 has one of the best cameras around and to be honest, it's not mind-blowing. I have a dSLR for photography. Sure it's good to have a good phone camera, as it's far more practical, and always to hand. But at the end of the day, for taking good quality photos, I would never rely solely on a phone.

its funny how none of these companies seem to make a GREAT phone i mean are they doing this on purpose or what? lets say the Z has everything you want from it just get a screen that has EVERYTHING plus a great camera and thats it, it would be THE phone..

then htc.. releases nice phones good HW kills them with simple things like SD slots/logos that make no sense or don't sell something in uk for e.g...

now comes samsung.. makes a great phone.. nice display.. good audio.. great camera.. puts in a recycled yougurt can..

SERIOUSLY.. gimme half the budget you have for the Z and ill create a phone that kill everything on the market..

alu uni body
1080 display
all around best camera sensor avaiable..
stock android
epic audio chip..
s4..
2gb ram
sd slot..
32gb internal memory..
great design..

it feels like all the people that are the "Top" have it wrong in their heads.

Don't forget the screen won't seem so bad in the phone shops due to the conditions i.e. lots of bright lights shining on top of the screen thus you can't really get a good idea as to what the colours of the screen are like and especially the viewing angles, get it in a normal room with just a few lights, which aren't extremely bright and hanging over the phones then that is where the problems are big imo i.e. viewing angles, terrible blacks and slightly washed out colours (that last part isn't as bad as their previous phones though)

Motorola really had the best device out of them all (aside from camera area) but unfortunately their lack of concern for the UK meant we have only been able to buy the RAZR HD like a few days ago :o

Is that a statement you can confirm yourself? I'm waiting until i get a physical retail phone in my hand before i'd start saying anything like that.
