Currently looking into upgrading my old pc and was advised the Gigabyte Z77-D3H was probably the top budget board on the market however recently read that MSI Z77-D3H may now be the best board on the market. Opinons?

I assume you read this months CustomPC then? :)

To be honest pick which board you like the appearance of - they are both on parity feature wise, both overclock equally well based on reviews and both cost similar price.

Only real differences between them are:
No extra PCI Controller on MSI (So potentially less issues + better PCI-E Allocation e.g. SLI/Crossfire config is slightly better)

No Lucidlogic Virtu MPV software on MSI (may or may not be an issue)

MSata SSD Slot on Gigabyte.

I felt like making a thread to bash MSI but i'll just do it here as it's kind of on topic.
MSI makes the worst motherboard I have ever experienced including that crappy locked down one I got with my Time computer many years ago. Why do I feel so strongly about this?

  • Lack of offset voltage control
  • Keeps wiping my bios profiles
  • and just tonight it decided to up my multiplier by itself and force crash loops
Now this is with a Z68 but I wouldn't waste my time buying another MSI motherboard from now on because of the frustration.

This is not a fair assessment at all. I can vouch for the M Power Z77 being a great board. Very stable and loads of options within the bios for clocking. Great price point too.

Couldnt be happier with my Gigabyte Z77-D3H! Cant speak for MSI but Gigabyte have a UK repair centre so if anything goes wrong, the turn-around should be pretty quick.

Not had any issues with mine or my dad's MSI boards...both stable (well mine was until my accident - see another thread).

Only issue is they stick stickers to them, meaning the paper slips into the slots even when you try to carefully pull it off, but MSI are electronically sound.

OEM boards are vastly different to retail boards, I remember capacitor problems on the OEM Socket A MSI boards used in the 'Time Machines' and they were pap.

My choices these days are Asus or MSI, not keen on Gigabyte but hey ho its personal preference.

MSI, ASUS and Giga all make great boards in different price points. Giga is the one of choice at this level for me.

I would go with the MSI, I did.

Had a gigabyte board before hand, cattle and trucked after 6 months and from day one would have intermittent boot loop issues (common issue with the bloody things).

Asus or MSI for me now.
