Chinese military unit 61398 behind "prolific hacks"

Every Sunday the company I work for get repeated access attempts to our network from China and Russia (we have traced the IP's)

Didnt they trace some hacking attempts a few years ago to a Chinese college? The Chinese came out and said it was impossible as the college trains hairdressers??

Sounds like an odd dream, but im pretty sure it happened

From the page I posted earlier:

The papers identified Zhang as working at the PLA Information Engineering University. The institution is one of China’s principal centers for electronic intelligence, where professors train junior officers to serve in operations throughout China, says Mark Stokes of the Project 2049 Institute, a think tank in Washington. It’s as if the U.S. National Security Agency had a university.

So I'd say your information is correct.

I expect it is a good read, but it's not like the Americans and the rest of us aren't doing the same thing...

The virus that was attacking the Iranian nuclear infrastructure anyone? ;)

Its a bit more targeted in the west.... the Chinese seem to be trying to break into and/or attacking anything and everything they can.

FFS this has been going on since the birth of the internet and not just China but all world powers have at least some form of cyber warfare division whether they deny it or not.

First the great firewall of china gets an upgrade, and now they are deciding to hack, it's blatant they want to become a computer superpower by imposing that they are untouchable.

Its been known for quite a while, but I think its the first time a security firm has said it so explicitly.

To be fair hacking has occurred everywhere, for quite a long time, the only new thing is the scale is becoming known to the masses. Theres long been rumours of India hacking US satellites to try and hide their nuclear tests in the 90's for instance. The UK has had a pretty competent cyber force since WWII as well.

Look up the Russian business network to see the scale private companies can get to.

I was chatting to a senior security guy from Gartner a while ago, and he was saying just how rife Chinese hacking is now. It's about time Western Governments started putting some real pressure on China to put a stop to it while we still have an economy left.
