Hi Guys

Quick question, I'm transferring data between my pc and network WD My Book Live 2tb and getting 31.4mb per second

My PC lan card is 1gb speed, as is the Billion 7800n in between and so is the ethernet port on the NAS drive, question is am I getting full throughput on the speed?

I'm not so sure

Thanks Mart

It's a poor speed for gigabit, but cheap NAS drives tend to give rubbish speeds. It's around the same speed you'll get over USB. Fine for streaming etc, just a pain if you're copying a lot of data over.

Full throughput would be 120~125MB/s if the hard drives were quick enough. Generally if I've got ~80MB/s I'm happy. This is PC to PC, also done on a Billion 7800N using slow hard drives

I have the same drive, and what your getting is pretty good TBH. I usually see anywhere from 20-30 depending on what I am copying.
As said, it sucks for big transfers, but the original mybook was worse, topping out at around 9

Yes I thought the disks would be the bottle neck, but I also thought I might get more throughput than that though...

Latest drivers on my motherboard, apart from that there isn't much I can tweak to squeeze more bandwidth from them is there

Oh well, thanks for the feedback gents

Unfortunately not. Completely limited by the processor in the NAS.

Not sure if you are using for streaming, but in case you are, its worth knowing that the Twonky server on the NAS can be upgraded. The version it ships with is well out of date and does not play nice with some modern eqpt.

Oh I have upgraded the firmware on the NAS will look at Twonky

EDIT: Its not a free upgrade then :( just had a look online

Thanks

Yup, it's the NAS itself that'll be limiting the speeds.

Even old 80GB drives should achieve at least 50MB/s

What you're copying will make a massive difference to the speeds achieved.

Is it the model that SmallNetBuilder reviewed here? The review has some good information about the speeds you can expect.

It was an absolute doddle. I am still on my trial license, but so far so good.

You will need to enable SSH if not already done so. The guide tells you the rest.

Just some of my own experiences with the Mybook Live.
If you have a firmware that works for you, stick with it. The firmware upgrade process can be very flaky and often introduces more problems than it solves.
If SSH is enabled, a bricked drive can virtually always be recovered. If SSH is disabled, it usually means an RMA.

That thread I have linked to pretty much covers any issuses you have.
I have used the Mybook for over a year with no issues once I got it setup properly. Its been a great streamer. Especially once I learned how to change the "views" of what is sent to my device.
I only needed to upgrade the Twonky server because of incompatabilities with my new Samsung TV.

If I can help any more, just shout.

:)
