Car for girlfriend - New driver - £2500

I can't speak for the others, but we are tearing our hair out trying to get reasonable quotes on even the basic models of a Yaris older than a 2006/2007 plate. The insurance on fully comp for a driver with 6 months and aged over 30 goes from £1k to nearly £1.5k when going down to 2005 or older.

They do seem to be a good choice at around this money :) We found that one on AT, but it did take a few weeks and a couple of visits to some rubbish ones. This was the third car we went to see/test drive.

Hardly anything in terms of power/performance, the 1.4 is marginally more powerful and uses a drop more fuel.

However the 1.4 is more common since it was in the Mk6s from the beginning of production, whereas the 1.25 was added a couple of years into production.

Edit: Have a read through my original thread, lots of very helpful advice from forum members: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18400223

Cheers for that, will read through it now.

Pug 207 is screwed together surprisingly well and is a proper depreciation monster. I'd bet you can get a loaded one on a 58 plate with no more than 30k on the clock for £2500.

All the cars in the original op are common as muck so im confused as to why you dont want a fiesta/fpcus. Cheap to repair and cheap to buy..

A Fiat Panda isn't an old French car

Oh dear... Now you see why I'm asking for advice. ITALIAN! I knew that, honestly.

I like the look of the 207, good reviews. None at 2.5k and certainly not with 30k on the clock but for £3k you certainly do seem to get a lot more for your cash with a 207 compared to the fiesta. Looks a lot sleeker and newer.

The 207 is cheap because it is a terrible car. Do not be seduced by its looks.

I'm not disagreeing, you know a lot more than me. However, parkers and other car reviews seem to disagree and say its pretty good.

What don't you like about it?

They're a pretty standard/cheap first car for various reasons. A used one will probably have been ragged stupid by one or more young drivers, and electrical faults are horrendously common in Peugeots (and, well... anything French).

Avioding old french cars is "On Trend" isnt it...

Excuse me while i roll around in my Peugeot 306 thats 14 years old has no even the slightest drop of rust and all of the electrics are working....

Meanwhile someone in a Ford.....

207's arent going to set your world alight but they are nice enough for what they are inside and are actually a big improvement on the 206.

Fiat grande puntos are well within budget and look pretty modern. These also get decent reviews. The fiesta just looks so dated inside and out compared to the fiat and pug. While I appreciate its probably cheaper to repair etc. the fuel economy on them doesn't look that great either.

Am I barking up the wrong tree looking at grande puntos and also 207's? Are all the car review sites missing something?
