Being sent home without notice.

This happened to me when working in a factory once. We worked so hard on one day that there was literally nothing left to do the next day = got sent home with no pay. Since that date everyone stopped putting quite as much effort in to working efficiently!

Excellent work ethic.

If management cant manage their staff effectively, they are to blame, not the staff

I don't understand why some people put up with so much ****!

Do they have no self respect?
Over-saturated unskilled workforce, basically.

Employers have oodles of people who would take a job at the drop of a hat, so don't give a monkeys about the employees.

We're due a workers revolution it seems.

You can only grind people down so far before they'll bite back.

My eldest daughters ex boyfriend was made redundant and I couldn't believe how he was treated at some places. Many a time an agency would send him to a job only to get there and be sent home. One job was in a warehouse 17 miles away so he borrowed my daughters car and was sent home after 2 hours on minimum wage. The following day he made the 34 mile round trip for another 2 hours but on the 3rd day he declined saying it was costing more in petrol and they had a right go at him. I was able to get him a job at the hospital on 'zero hours' and the bosses really loved his work ethic but because the way the NHS employs people they couldn't take him on.

Zero hours relate to workers who are not promised any time at all but are usually rung up to fill a few hours. Some zero hours workers do work a full week but there are no promises and of course if they are sick or want a holiday they don't get paid.

We have zero hour contracts at work and we pay SSP and Holiday pay based on the average they have worked over the last 12 week period. I maywell be wrong but surely they would have to pay hols and SSP.

No, and your girlfriend has little legs to stand on because the job is unskilled, and low quality labour so trade unions won't take action especially as your girlfriends job could be replaced in 7 seconds.

No, I know 100% they don't get paid if they don't turn in.
the majority of zero hours are students who come in 3 times a week for 4 hours so it's easier to get paid when you come in.

I hadn't realised there was legislation governing travelling to and from work. I always make a great effort to get to work regardless of weather, but after a bump in my car on the way to a night shift in the snow I might ring up next time and at least try to arrange alternative transport.
