Gamble on eBay - Honesty test.

Contrary to what a lot of the threads on here paint, eBay isn't full of people trying to screw others over. Most transactions go just fine.

WHY DID YOU not use recorded? 75p each is not that bad

Paying 75p per item when you're only selling the item for £14 is unecessary unless you believe the buyer will be dishonest/the package will be lost in the post at least 5% of the time - which in my experience is not the case.

I never bother with tracked postage but then I rarely send anything of real value anyway.

I also prefer it when I'm sent things without the requirement of a signature as I don't have to be there to receive it.

I recently sold a Superdry Shirt on Ebay, buyer paid for it quite promptly with a message along the lines of can you send it to this address as my paypal one is wrong, ok i thought fair enough.
I was ill so it took me a couple of days to get around to sorting out the postage etc, I sent a message saying so and that i'd send it asap, they said don't worry they are out of the country for a few days so send it on the following Monday.

It was sent on the Monday first class, i told the missus to get it tracked, she never, what do i know ? lol
I get a message on Thursday, "..have you sent it out yet blah, blah", i reply yes on Monday as we said, reply "..oh ok, was it tracked ?" if it's not here by Monday i'm gonna have to request a refund", i reply no it was first class, i have the receipt.

The next Tuesday i get another message, "..it hasn't arrived yet, and no note through my door from Post Office, can i have a refund please", I reply ,can you check with your neighbours, next day they say they checked with their neighbours and nothing, in the meantime my missus has been back to the Post Office and spoke to the lady who took the parcel, she said they get this a lot and do not give them a refund, we get a lost parcel form to fill out and give back to them with the photocopied receipt, apparently they can check the parcel al the way back to the postman who does the round and are able to find out the history of the parcel, she said a lot of them just get left in sorting offices !!

I send a message to the buyer telling them all this information and it could take up to two weeks, so i won't be refunding you until then.
I get a message 10 minutes later saying the parcel arrived, sorry i should have said lol

I do think it depends a great deal on what you are selling.

I have read a few threads about problems selling mobile phones etc.

When selling electronics or anything of the sort always make sure to take pictures of it beforehand and note down any serial numbers that will help identify it (preferably pictures).

You would be in a right mess if for example you're selling a mobile phone and the buyer has a broken one. They buy your one, return their broken one to you claiming it came like that so it was damaged in the post or something similar. Ebay/Paypal would likely side with the buyer which is why it would be important that you have some sort of proof that the mobile phone they returned to you isn't the one that you sent them.

not needed

track EVERYTHING!

No need

hope you at least got proof of postage which is free

Ding ding ding!

For items with such a low value recorded delivery is not needed at all.
Just get a certificate of postage, covers for upto 40x the cost of a 1st class stamp. At least you'll get yer money back if the ebay users decide to be shady.

Ebay I send everything either recorded or special, depending on the value, I generally dont sell any items that go for less than £5 on ebay so doesnt warrant using postage thats not tracked.

Generally I also find that a lot of people wont leave you any feedback really, even though you have left them some, and contacted them asking to leave you some, they just forget or cant be arsed, and you never hear from them again.

A guy sent me an item untracked before,

I know cause It came and I didnt have to sign for it, coulda pulled fast one on his ass it was worth roughly 300 pounds too :D

Ofc i didn't do that but just sayin people gotta wise up

I always pay the extra for recorded delivery but you will probably only get feedback on half of them, people just can't be bothered.

Should be fine. I've sold scores of stuff on eBay and only tracked things that were rare or particularly expensive. I've only had one thing go missing and that was a broken laptop. Again, I didn't have it tracked but Royal Mail honoured what it was worth and paid up. Whether the buyer actually didn't receive it, I'll never know for real.

Thanks for helping clarify things.

I intend to continue to sell small inexpensive items, as by doing so I have succeeded in building an otherwise expensive RC helicopter without dinting the family budget.
I have now received positive for 4 out if the six items.
