Sony Playstation 4 - Impact on the PC games industry?

Well, this always happens when a new console launches.
Keep in find this generation of consoles will prob have a 7-10 life cycle, just like last gen, so it's good that they have ramped up everything, and us PC users will have way better hardware than the PS4 in the next 1-2 years anyway.

On a software side, it looks like they are trying to target the casual and social media market, which I don't like at all (with the integration of facebook, etc.)

Basically the Ps4's architecture has changed in a way that'll make it easier to bring the games on to the PC platform I believe. Doubt that was the reason they did it but it is a bi product none the less.

There is a lot of chat about "graphics" which is pretty much what we see on screen. I'm hoping that with the gddr5 and the extra horsepower via cpu and gpu we will see environments in games that utilize better physics scenarios (such as particle physics, lighting, shadows, dynamic/changing environments (Red Faction 1 style stuff)) as well as the whole texture pack shizniz. TBH all the top tier games look good graphically not just because they use high resolution textures but because they have all sort of little things going on to really make the sum greater than all the parts.

I like some of the ideas they brought to the table, such as being able to download and play the game at the same time, and stream and upload. However, my thoughts were how somebody with a crummy internet connection like myself would be able to cope.

In terms of actual games I've no doubt that we'll see some better made games, but it's just been the usual cgi trailers and enhanced videos, nothing to get excited over.

ps4 / xbox will push the games being produced bit forward as basically the consoles control what is made. forget spin that pc dev tells you about game 90 percent make for console we know it they know it . so i look forward to there release and the crap we getting at moment.

the specs are about same as a med to high end pc what this may do though is kill off some pc gamers as why build a 800-1000 pound pc when a ps4 does same with same spec for £400 for next few years?

that is the only problem with there release and before all the cryboys come in no way its that fast they are. ps4 should be out for its launch game which is bf (no surprise as battlefields lead platform is ps3, oct ) and xbox is for november which is cod.

As ever PC will reaming the top dog in performance and the ability to customise your experience to how you please. Next gen consoles will bring along with them better looking and playing PC games and we won't have the issue as last gen where the architecture was so different it made crafting a PC game expensive and time consuming. So ports should be much better from the get go with a lot of 3rd part devs focusing on PC as the main platform in some cases.

PC will still lack the massive exclusives compared to what Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony chuck about and might get segregated a bit in the mobile/cross device sharing capabilities the PS4 is pushing for.

I don't think we will see PC gaming drop off like it did when the last generation of consoles came out and still will remain a massive focus for devs even more so once the Steam box lives. Its a win win for everybody :D

I'm still liking the look of a PS4 and for a probably £400-450 device you can't really moan at the graphics or experiences it will be able to produce (if they hit what they are advertising)!

What happened to the PC arena when the last gen (360/Ps3) came out? I was not PC gaming at that point so cannot comment, but I would imagine it wouldn't be too dissimilar.

The sooner we get the next gen consoles the better. As usual PC gaming is held back by the current console tech.

+1, many PC gamers don't seem to realise how important the console market is for our own gaming experience. Developers aren't going to push out super hi-res games if it's only going to work on the PC, they want mass market and oohs and ahhs from the console folks. That's where the real money is after all. PC gaming is for many games a tiny fraction of the revenue generated (excluding MMOs).

Update those consoles, give the derp crowd better graphics so we can reap the rewards.

Bring on the Playstation Quad-Derp.

They announced nothing, they showed a video of a few games and fancy controller but what did they actually show?

It was about beating Microsoft to try and dampen their presentation. If Sony are going to release a console for xmas surely to god they must have a prototype ready to be manufactured.

Does Sony not have to secure lines of Manufacturing to ensure that they meet demand?

ps4 will be about 399 dollars or 399 quid here

xbox will be about 300 dollars and 300 here

bookmark that for when released :)

That scene in the Gaikai section with all the people in the world walking around looking at phones and screens etc really freaked me out!!

When I turn it off I want to do just that. Turn it off, leave and do something else. The world is really turning into strange place with everyone connected all of the time.

They're going to have to start building padding into lamp-posts!! :D

Absolutely, the PS4 is rumoured to be a getting a 7970m or equivalent GPU. That is a very good and capable GPU, could mean PC gamers will see another push but what is really holding PC development back is parity.

Consoles just aren’t uniform enough, get the next xbox and Playstation on the same architecture, should see developers having engines that work well and scale well across all platforms and just up the textures if the platform has the grunt or backend hardware to allow for this.

But you could argue this is what developers should have been doing already, so does this mean the biggest hold up for PC gamers is actually the developers? We’ve had hardware available for ages that can show consoles why they are so dated now, but recently what games have really pushed PC’s to their limits that have been released same time as a console version?

Crisis 3, you could say witcher 2, but that was PC to start with then ported to 360. Battlefield 3?

But I agree, if developers have a next gen platform to develop for, could mean PC gamers get some excellent games but I seem to remember when consoles went 720p PC games did decline a little as many who saw a 360 running Forza or a PS3 running uncharted jumped to consoles for a while…

Although, I do not have figures to prove this, but it did feel like PC development took a back seat when the last lot of next gen consoles were released…

If the PS4 and the next Xbox run on bearly tweaked PC based hardware, then it should make cross platform development and porting a breeze. No more shoddy ports that suck graphically and performance wise.
