PS4 to use the 7970M GPU. What does this hold for PC gamers?

The best thing that could happen is honestly for AMD and even Nvidia to push dev's to develop for Linux instead.

im hoping thats what the ps4 is built on, as we know its not windows based so the obvious answer would be a linux based os especially if the devs have had a hand in it as all the pr claims.

Nice demo of the Unreal 4 engine running on a PS4 :

Hither :)

Really not that impressed with that. They've cut out one of the primarily impressive aspects of the original PC demo which was the real time global illumination. That video attempts to hide this by being outside where everything is lit by daylight for the most part.

How does this appeal:

X86-64, so possibly easier to 'hack' with an aim to linux support (something that was official on the ps3 with ydl). Linux now has full steam support, linux based pc gaming on a ps3?

I didn't find it impressive either, yeah for a console but being honest as far as I am concered that is just a cinematic trailer of a pre-rendered game, recording on a PC and advertised as a PS4 rendered game scene, which it probably is not.

Things like this have been happening in game advertisiements for years, using pre-rendered cinematic cut scenes etc and claiming gameplay footage or something similiar.

The GPU was rumored to be a 7970M a while back, and it seems like a slightly cut-down version of that would match up pretty well. We're talking about a console after all, not something that's likely to have a discrete graphics board.

7850: 16 CU (1024 SP), 64 TU, 32 ROP, 1.76 TFLOPS
7870: 20 CU (1280 SP), 80 TU, 32 ROP, 2.56 TFLOPS
7970M: 20 CU (1280 SP), 80 TU, 32 ROP, 2.18 TFLOPS

"PS4": 18 CU (1152 SP), 74 TU, 32 ROP, ~1.86 TFLOPS

The 7850/70 7970m all have 156.3GB/s memory bandwidth and the ps4 custom one has 176GB/s.

I dub thee the 7960M!

Well during the event they showed the same thing and also showed moving around (albeit minor) with the controller - safe to say it wasn't pre-rendered.

so it's some where round the power of a 7870/660ti?

Sounds impressive think I'm going to get one or the xbox :)

Whens the release date

At the end of the presentation it said fall 2013, but apparently that's for North America/ Japan. we'll get it early 2014

ps4 generally seems to be good news for pc gaming? an increase in amd profits and sales of amd desktop parts can rejuvenate both amd and the receding desktop pc platform. definitely means easier pc ports.

powerful amd gpu = better graphics quality in ps4, and thereby ported, games.
8gb of ram = an increase in 64-bit game production.
havok = physics for both amd and nvidia hardware, the inclusion of which may motivate developers to add physics to more games.

may be being optimistic but it sure sounds great

Not necessarily, if the PS4 has the WOW factor and games look stunning perhaps someone with a desktop PC wanted to upgrade would just buy a PS4 and not a new desktop PC or upgrade their PC.

Why would someone who just wants to play games buy a desktop PC when a PS4 can do it just as good if not better ?

I dont see how a PS4 can stop the desktop PC platform diminishing.

I think it is great news. I was more impressed by the 8gb ram than the CPU and gpu specs. I think the press have played it down but this is a potential game changer for both consoles and pc gaming.

A 7850 speed gpu might not sound earth shattering but considering they are targeting 1080p at 60hz, it's going to be awesome.

Minimum specs for pc games could jump from 4c and 4gb ram to 8c and 8gb ram within 18months.

of course the ps4 is also a competitor to the pc gaming platform, but unlike its predecessors it at least comes with some side effect benefits for the pc. if the ps4 had been designed with the same capabilities but using custom hardware it would do nothing positive for pc gaming (unless... the ps4 in this scenario is so hard to code for that devs flee to the pc :D).

and i kind of feel amd may be less inclined to reduce r&d for desktop parts... or something. maybe with more money for r&d they can start making good cpus (*snap*! ...jk). at the very least this is going to keep amd afloat to keep competing with intel, which is good especially considering intel's looking to abandon discrete cpus.

so in short 2 things:
1. amd survives, which is good because amd and intel are the only desktop cpu people.
2. game porting becomes easier, increases desirability of desktop pc rigs, more people buy desktop pcs.
