Virgin Media Discussion Thread

For all those that just got a new PSU for their modem in the post - because of a safety recall, go to this link and read the information carefully

https://my.virginmedia.com/customer-news/articles/powersupply

Because not all power bricks are affected, but the letter sent out does not make that clear enough, nor have the same instructions as that web link.

For example, mine was not one of the faulty ones, however if i had just swapped them, as instructed in the letter sent out, then i would have replaced a 12v adapter with a 10v one, which would probably have resulted in an under/poor performing modem, if it even worked at all.

@physichull The amount of jitter will make online gaming impossible.

Am I just screwed now?

At the mercy of VM's unfulfilled promises? It's seeming like that the more I read about it, that there is not much you can do, even after complaining and getting so-called "engineers out to fix the problem".

Yes warrington in many areas is suffering from upstream congestion. A new cable and more upstream is being added. Cat C resegmentation according to VM.

Its wierd, because I used to live in Gorse Covert up until about a year ago and I had a 10mb connection and it was superb! It was rock steady and I don't download much so it was perfect, but now I've moved, its been a bit terrible! Started off ok, but last two weeks have been VERY sketchy.

Any ideas when things may be a bit more stable?

Sorry forgot to add the date. Its tomorrow!! 20/02/2013 I've been waiting since August for this fix and since early 2011 there has been 7 fault codes relating to over use in my area.

This Cat C reseg is supposede to be the top line fix. That includes new kit at street level and in the main hubs feeding the area effected. Im sure it should be a big improvment given the impending arrival of BT infinity.

Also VM hasn't spend any money it really didnt have to, making the company look more profitable to its buyers. Hence a lot of the double speed upgrades and upload speed upgrades have been push to Dec 2013 / Jan 2014. What a shock the new company will get when they see the state of the VM network compared to the rose tintted balance sheet from not investing in new kit.

Thats my rant over, fingures crossed for tomorrow.

I hope you're getting money off or getting out of your contract because of it. I did that a few years ago, got fed up with Virgin kicking the can further down the road when the date comes.

Docsis 3 (50Mb+) seems to have sorted the issues in the Preston area - get 105Mb/5Mb speeds at all times now.

In Warrington WA2 we have DOCSIS 3 with 6 downstream but only 1 upstream. Just phoned 2nd line and we are suffering from 100% utilisation from 7am until 1am every day. VM are still pushing the fix date although the currant fault code was raised in Aug 2012. With 7 smaller fixes since Oct 2011.

If I could leave I would but BT can only supply 1meg down and 256k up in my area. Sad thing is VM know this so wont spend any money in areas where there is no compatition. I have the option to leeave with out fees and already had £150 refund for the last 12 months.

Fix date pushed for the 6th time. Now 02/04/2013

Joys.

Mine seems to have settled down a lot from the other night, but I am still seeing a lot of throttling issues around peak times. My ping graphs tend to increase well over 100 around 5pm-10pm then settle down a bit after that and through the rest of the day.

Seriously slow tonight!

I'm on the 30 package.

Confused I just got this on a server that's quite far away.

Joe, sometimes the closest server is not the best one to test from, and it is not inconceivable that some servers may also give poor results based on saturation levels too

Just found out the fix date for the work in Warrington is a total fabrication. No date has been set at any time for the work to actually be carried out. So April will come and go.

Same here in the BN area, we are struggling from one problem to the next. Connection is ok right now for most of us but last week was absolutely useless, 30% packet loss and all sorts.
They say that the reseg fix dates depend on planning permission being granted so are reviewed and moved depending on the permission being granted. I suspect the put a "holding" date up and then wait to see if they get permission to do the work, if its not in yet then they move the date again, and again.

Hey guys, apologies if this is a known thing, i dont usually pop in here but recently my 30Mbps connection has been capped a silly amount of times. I thought it was just typical congestion in the area but now ive realised that if i download a couple gig of data in one go, im immediately capped to 5Mbps for hours at a time.

Now i know in the TOC it said something along the lines of excessive use during the day you will be capped, fair enough, but after 9pm this isnt so is it? and a couple gig isnt excessive so why they coming down on me all of a sudden for as little as 1 or 2 gig DLs? :(

I get 120mb/s sec now but hit the download limit with relatively minimal downloading. Less than 6Gb sometimes. Which in this day and age is hardly anything really.

It just seems all the speed increase gives me is a faster way to be speed limited. Kind of pointless really.

Dosent take 8 months to apply for planning permission. Ok I'll be reasonable. 6 months if you take off 2months for the network team to plan which node and CMTS needs upgrading. As they have access to a lot more network traffic info then me. Although I can tell you it's been overloaded a lot longer than the 8 months of the currant fault code.

@Castor, VM have moved the STM times usage is now measured until 10pm. It used to be 9pm. Started a week ago I think.
