At the Panasonic Convention 2013 the company launched the ZT60 High-end Plasma TV stating it was a 'KURO KILLER' with beyond Reference Picture Quality. The Set will cost around £4K and is available in May.

I'd heard that Panasonic hired most of the Kuro engineering team when Pioneer pulled the plug, their plasmas have been slowly but surely improving through the last three years.

Rumours have been around for some time that Panasonic would take over Pioneer's KURO plasma technology and Pioneer's plasma patents. These rumours have now been confirmed by Pioneer in their Annual Report 2009.

Panasonic and Pioneer began collaborating before Pioneer had to exit the plasma market due to heavy losses. Subsequently this has led to speculation that Panasonic would take over Pioneer’s KURO plasma technology and related patents.
Panasonic has now officially done so, according to Pioneer’s Annual Report, and Panasonic have worked with the technology since May 2009.

Pioneer has confirmed the Panasonic acquisition in their Annual Report from 2009 which can be found here: Pioneer Annual Report 2009.
Pioneer writes:

- "The Company resolved to transfer its patents for plasma display panels and modules to Panasonic Corporation at the Board of Directors’ meeting held on April 28, 2009. The two companies had executed the agreement on May 15, 2009. This constitutes part of the business restructuring effort in accordance with plans for a full withdrawal from the display business."

It should be interesting when they are out for reviews when calibrated properly. I have seen a calibrated VT50 against a calibrated Kuro and it was very very close with the VT50 being better in some respects the Kuro in others. I find in a lot of cases people comment on picture performance without actually seeing them side by side. Kuro owners seem to highlight the superior black levels when this actually plays only a small part to overall picture quality.

The ZT60 has a new panel and a new method of being driven, I suspect this will be an evolution of the panel and drive method of the 9G Kuro as Pansasonic bought the patents when Pioneer withdrew from the market and took on several of the engineers. I am hoping this ZT60 will be a replacement for my Kuro.

I still praise my Kuro's because at 5 yrs old theyre still ahead of its competition.

Well its was....Poss still is....Will await and see

It's £4k, 60" only and there's only going to be 30,000 of them made for Europe and sold in shops that can demo them properly, people that have seen it think it's the new best TV made.

For reviews, the only ones that matter are AVForums, HDTVTest and proper videophile places like that.

For everyone else, there's the VT series still. Btw it's the ZT65 and VT65 here in the UK.

Yep, so panasonic can keep track of where any ZT60's come from as they will be imports and not covered .

Am really interested in these...

My Pioneer LX508D cost me £3300 (+£200 for the side speakers) But I don't think I ever pay over 3K again for just a TV don't matter how good or big it is...;)

Lol which :p.

It was a legit question, in my industry (AV) you get the professional viewpoints which are slightly biased due to sponsorship and such, then you get the consumer reviews from Which/Cinema glossy mags etc. and neither really give you a true perspective of the product.

So I was asking what gives a true review of a product like this?

Ask a big independent brown goods repairer.

All the reviews use working units.

I used to own a big repair center. So we used to see the other side..The side when they dont work.

i think a lot of people wouldn't pay that much no matter how rich they are.

it's the law of diminishing returns, the more you spend the less you get for your money.

i was going to buy the GT50 last summer it was £1400 at the time, the D8000 was £769, sure the GT50 is a better tv, but no way was it £631 better than a D8000 so I went for the D8000, realistically speaking, i doubt anyone in my home apart from me could tell the difference between the D8000 and a Kuro or this new panel.
