Golf mk2 good first car?

Do you have any pics of your mk2? and what car you have now?

Not my picture but same colour and spec. Although mine was lowered 60mm in the end, Oh and mine was a 3 door

Not driving anything at the moment, but it will be a 2000 1.6 Ford Escort Estate in a few months time as it'll be cheap from my Dad and I have a baby on the way.

Nice, I like the colour if you could drop in some BBS that you can get cheap used and re freshed it would look even better! ;)

theyre pics from 5 years ago or so. i like BBSs but theyre a pain to clean and a bit predictable in the golf scene

if id have kept that car it would have stayed OE looking and id have transferred all my mk3 hardware into it :D

Love the mk2 gti's.. I remember driving the 8v after driving my nova sr and thinking how damned torquey it was...Nothing by todays standards im sure but a blast nontheless.. Mint, unmolested, which are the most rare go for 4k+. Most have been molested and bodged with though, i think id get a 1.8t conversion if i were ever to plump for one.

1.8t? Why not vr6 2.8 or 2.9 from corrado? :D

More tunable and lighter. Also if going for a vr6 then the 2.8 is less prone to bore wear on cylinders 1 and 6 than the 2.9.

I checked recently and my old grey mk2 16v is still on the road. I would love to find it.

I would highly recommend not allowing a drive in a highly tuned and modified car on some great country roads lure you into buying a 1.3 version which you will drive around on the pot-ridden roads of England.

Before you learn to drive and have a licence, you will lust after many [some ridiculous] manner of car especially if you get given the opportunity to drive it. We've all done it.

I still firmly state that the 1.8t with a standard blower has no place at all in a gti. There is not a shred of fun character in that engine.

I'd vote vr

I had a Mk2 1.6 for my first car and it served me well for nearly 4 years. Hardly skipped a beat! Took me to the Mediterranean and back no problem.

They are very good cars, very reliable if you treat your car with respect then yes, if not than no wonder it brakes ;]
But the insurance will be probably high any way, does any one know roughly what are the costs?
I had a talk with my dad today and we considered some sensible options, to not get ripped off with 4-5k insurance... Because to me its crazy!

They came from an era when the cars were meant to las . I have a mk3 too which is no 237k and still a trooper

My mk4 is no 200k but I think it has taken more work to get there

I paid £1300 at 19,although footman James won't do a classic policy for under 25s anymore.

Something like an extra 60kg infront of the front wheels though. On a car that's back end already weighs nothing .

Always would have to be an ABF for me unless a warehouse full of newg60's showed up . Easy swap , Enough power , bombproof

ABF is the 'proper' way, a supercharged VR can't be beat on noise though.
