Hi guys, could use a little help speccing up a build for a friend. use will be mostly gaming, plus facebook, streaming, word processing etc.
Budget is a fixed £700, although any change could be used to upgrade their current system (as both will still be used) which is an i3 530 or 540, 4gb, 260GTX.

I am more familiar with intel, but have nothing against AMD, although power is a major consideration, and AFAIK the powerful AMD cpus are a bit hungry!

my initial thoughts were that £700 should be sufficient for an i5+8GB with a 7850 or 660. the need an OS as well, which puts a slight crimp on it, but no monitor/peripherals needed.

a K series processor would have course be nice, but if it helps the budget in other areas then we could drop it to a normal i5.....I'd rather keep a quad in there if possible though.

for the GPU, I have a 6950 2GB MSI TF3 lying about spare, which I could sell them cheap to save a bit.

apologies for the rambling prose, rushing to post before I leave the office!

Well he said he would sell it to them not give it away and the budget is fixed at £700. So lose the SSD and that goes towards the GPU, an SSD can be added later easy enough.

It depends how cheap he wants to sell the card for doesn't it.

Also last thing I would buy is a B grade HDD, I would want a full warranty with OcUK should it go funny. Out of all the things Bgrade for sale a HDD is the most worrying to me.

Yes it does, I did say that at the end of my spec.

Fair point about the B grade HDD, it is refurbished and comes with a 3 month warranty and whatever is left with the manufacturer. Although to be fair the rig can warn them when the HDD is in poor health, you don't get that sort of advanced warning with a mobo or GPU for example.

If they want all new I can always tweak the spec.....

wow! thanks so much guys, some great specs there, kinda similar to what I was thinking, but wanted to check my opinions weren't too far off.

what I'm mainly seeing here, is that a 3570k is very possible with this budget, and that the z77-dh3 is unmatched for it's price range :)

I'll have a chat with them RE: the GPU and see what we can sort out.

Stulid, love the fact you managed to squeeze an SSD and a storage drive in there, which is tempting me to lend them the card until they can afford to pay me for it!

I might be able to cheap out on the OS, just occured to me that I still have an XP pro key, so could instant-upgrade to win 8 to save a few £

totally agreed on B grade HDD. in fact anything B grade would be a hard sell, as if something breaks, they are not in a great position to chuck money at replacements as needed.

Thanks once again for taking the time to confirm my thinking, will post back with a semi-final spec tomorrow or sunday most likely :D

part have been ordered over the weekend, and should be here today, hopefully built this evening. apologies as I don't have the basket plugin set up, but the build is as follows:

i5 3570k, gigabyte z77-dh3, 8GB samsung green RAM, zaward vapor cooler, 120gb samsung 840, 1TB caviar blue, my 6950 2GB, in a white bitfenix shinobi, and on a 500w modular corsair builder series. went with windows 8 upgrade edition.
Really looking forward to building this up and seeing what it can do! although slightly worried it'll put my rig iin it's place ;)
