New TV time - around £1000

Currently have a Samsung LE40M86BD which is getting on a bit now.

Looking for a 46" or above TV, main uses are:
Sport (football, Rugby and F1)
Blu rays and other HD content
Normal HD channel watching
XBox 360 from time to time
Thinking perhaps Smart TV would be an idea so the GF can watch online content etc, she's currently using the Apple TV and my XBox

Any suggestions?

Light or dark room? Will sunlight hit the screen?

in next 4-6 weeks most of the companies will start lauching this years range, be aware.

I can get pretty bright in the room during the summer but I tend to close the curtains.

I'm torn between the TX-P50GT50B and the UE46ES6900 right now.

What's coming with the new ranges?

Unknown with new ranges tbh.

I have an es6800 and love it - works fine with light on the screen.
The gt50 is very nicely reviewed and a great TV, but it is plasma, so you need to decide will you be able to see the screen or not when the light falls on it.

I'm swaying towards the Panny. I wonder if my local John Lewis has it in stock, and then if it'll fit in my V40.

+1 for the 50GT50, it's a truly amazing TV. Amazing blacks, ridiculously good dynamic contrast ration, great colour reproduction. It seems to fit the bill nicely for all your needs!

As for light, the filter does a pretty good job in bright conditions

Sweet , so we just wait about 3-4 months to see if any problems/design issues appear in these new models

I was suggetsing it to him, as if he waits 4 weeks, he might save several hundred pounds on his purchase if he buys last years models.

Just trying to suggest (from someone who repairs electronic goods for a living)
That it usually takes a while before newly released stuff tech shows any design flaws or issues that may be inherent to its design

Just watched Skyfall on it, it's lovely. It puts my old Sammy to shame! Very happy with the purchase though I did have to close the curtains and turn off the lights in the fishtank. I haven't played with any picture settings, I've been told to let it run in for 500 hours or so before getting something to calibrate it with. Looking forward to the rugby and lack of motion blur!
