Sony Playstation 4 - Impact on the PC games industry?

kinda depends on the games, it's all well and good saying console quality will lead to an improvement in pc games.. but those games are console ports, which we don't much like anyway.

Can you read? Next time don't leave out the bits I've already answered.

Most people would watch the video to see what the new PS4 can do.

The fact you choose to focus on the guys lack of aim, compared to yours, above the intended purpose of the video says a lot.

The word 'egocentric' comes to mind.

This is the second time you've said that, I've already elaborated I'm not comparing to my own.
I can say for sure though if you keep up that behaviour you're not going to get on with people at all, way to go at starting an argument over something you imagined reading.

Is it me or is he plucking stuff out of thin air? I never once compared my aim to that. I guess some people really like to make stuff up just to say something rude on a forum. Even when I explained it before.

I think the PC industry will suffer in the long term. I think people will wake up and realize they don't need to spend £1500 up for a decent gaming experience when the same can be done on a console costing £350. Charging £500 for a GTX 680 4GB which cant even max out a 2 year old game like the Witcher 2, is laughable.

PC gamers are treat like mugs by hardware manufacturers, charged an arm and a leg for hardware to run poorly optimized games that can and should be able to run on hardware 1/4 of the power. I wouldn't be suprised if this is done on purpose.

Theres hardly any PC exclusives left that are of note, with the trend shifting to consoles as the devs can see where the value for money gaming is. Proven by Blizzards announcement on the 20th. Soon we will be left with console scraps, with no exclusive developers, clutching our precious £500 graphics cards still claiming PC gaming is the best.

The only shinning light i can see from this inevitable doom is the steambox, which will be a make or brake for PC gaming.

I spoke about this on another forum, the thing is:

If PC gamers were happy to run everything without AA, very low shadows/shaders at 30fps(sometimes 60?) at a relatively low resolution but not always, then yeah of course you don't need to spend loads of money or upgrade often. Except PC gamers demand the best.

My brother until a few months ago was using my hand me down parts totalling a 6 year old PC which could still play all the latest titles, but at reduced graphics but still looked better than current gen consoles at a higher resolution.

The other issue is, how many people on these forums own a PC and a Console? I know loads of people who buy both but also argue the same point that a console is cheaper, in fact I know people who have a almost top of the line PC, xbox360/ps3/wii and other fangled systems who say "but consoles are cheaper" yet they've spend more money than people who stick to either/or.

The third argument is you're not buying just a gaming PC.
You're using the internet/IRC/Instant Messengers/Social Sites/streaming/voice comms/skype/music/videos & video editing/art, so much more.
On a relatively open platform to install programs.

What do you gather the % of households in a modern society with consoles have a home computer or family computer? I'd reckon it's more than not.
I'd bet they spend more than if they'd just stuck to a PC or console.

So to say the same can be done on a console is a little short-sighted, but understandable. A PC can, or could do everything a console can, except that it isn't plug & play and does require some technological knowledge due to compatability issues.

Maybe i came across a little to negatively, don't get me wrong im passionate about gaming and PC gaming. It just feels all to often you're getting a red hot poker stuffed up your arse, everytime a new game comes out, new windows comes out, new hardware is released. Just a vicious cycle and just not worth it. I said to myself im going to build a mid range PC, not going to go wild to play some games. Went with a 3570K, GTX 660Ti based system and im already close to £1000 and thats not including OS, monitor or k&m. Even more infuriating is with this system i cant even play games maxed out, the witcher 2 struggles and the new games that i want to play im not even sure i can play. Take crysis 3 for example, you need a pretty beefy rig to play on high settings which i doubt my 660ti will handle. Even maxed out on a super expensive rig its nothing special. Take this vid below of it maxed out on 1080p, its nothing special graphically or gameplay wise.

Im not seeing a £1000+ difference from say this on a £120 console

True, given the PS4 emphasis on social sides of things, i can do all this on the ps4 baring the video/photo editing which i don't do anyway. My main use for the PC is gaming and like you listed above. Anything else like word processing etc i can do on my cheapish laptop.

With this next generation the small advantages of PC gaming will disappear or become ever smaller, and with the shift of focus and momentum going towards the consoles the days of uber powered PC will be over.

Eh?

But PC hardware isnt going to stand still just becuase a new generation of consoles have arrived?

Whilst the hardware in the PS4 and Xbox720 stay the same over the next 5-7 years, we are going to see much faster cpu's and gpu's emerge forthe PC market.

Business as usuall really.

...

Nonsense.

If that was the case PC's would be long gone after the xbox and ps3 came out.

Nuff said?

I think people are highly over-estimating the leap in visual power that new consoles are going to bring to PC.

Also seen reports that the PS4 GPU is equivalent to a clocked 7850? If so, it's laughable. My Xfire 5850's, which are going on members market for around 50 quid each put out more power than that.

Considering that God of war is on the PS3 it looks superb. Really shows that when developers get to grips with the hardware the PS3 can really shine still now.

Wow, so if a crappy 512mb 8800 can produce visuals like that, why do none of the games out this second look that good? Also, why do games like Assassin's Creed 3 run rather poorly even on high end Nvidia GPUs (when its a Nvidia title!)?

Hardware isn't falling behind, PC isn't falling behind, developers are falling behind, big time. The biggest obstacle the PC will ever face is untalented developers releasing unoptimized rubbish, end of.

Simply because although an 8800GT could produce visuals like that, it couldn't implement them into a working game because it didn't have the power. If the new console has the power to put something close to that into a game then it's not bad, but it's certainly not the leap people seem to be expecting. If anything the PS4 head looks as good as any I've already seen in The Witcher 2 on PC, so I reckon visuals seen in The Witcher 2 should be the kind of graphics people need to be expecting rather than some godly visual powerhouse.

Difference between those is that one is a moving object and the other is essentially just a wax figure :p. I think the PS4 example was to show how well facial emotion can be done on the PS4 and in their defence, it looked very good.
