Giving up caffeine

As has been said before aspartame is completely safe and has never been proven to cause any health problems.
So why do you want to give it up?

And it's a funny way of phrasing it! I'm giving up x because i want to give up y and x usually contains y.

Aspartame is completely safe! Says company who makes it and also coincidentally invented agent orange...

Also it's not just aspartame itself that is bad it's also now been linked to causing your brain to rewire and increase sugar cravings thus weight gain. This applies to all artificial sweeteners.

And the government, and every study ever done on it (lots because of its controvasy).

So what? Is this supposed to be a convincing argument? coincidentally is the keyword here

[citation needed] Is thie psuedo science or are there some peer reviewed scientific studies you can cite? "causing your brain to rewire" - what does that even mean?!

Use google and don't spread crappy advice just because you're addicted to soft drinks and want to rationalise keeping drinking them.

Too lazy to defend your own argument? I'm not addicted to soft drinks, i mostly drink tea and water, I am just against know it all conspiracy theorists speading their propeganda like it's fact.

Saying Aspartame has been proven safe is factually incorrect, its been, in several studies, if you believe them(seriously the FDA is a completely ridiculous organisation, I'm not saying conspiracy theory, just they get stuff wrong ALL the time and almost any study for ANYTHING is backed by the company who makes it or company's who make an opposing product), has been proven to not cause certain problems and relatively quickly.

IE a study that says it doesn't cause cancer, doesn't in any way disprove that it makes your concentraction work, or a dozen other things.

Studies on drugs are alway, and I mean ALWAYS incomplete, no study for any drug in the world has been carried out over decades with 10k's of people to look for things like decrease concentration, sleep problems, causing cancer, causing breathing problems or anything else. I am i no way saying aspartame causes any of these, I'm saying studies people do to be deemed safe for human consumption are absolutely no where near complete and claiming aspatame is proven safe is completely incorrect.

Thousands of products have been proven safe in exactly the same way, and years or decades later found to be the cause for some condition or problem, the FDA is absolutely and entirely flawed, most food safety/health organisations are flawed in limited budgets and only looking for the big and obvious issues products cause.

THe problem these days with the internet, the money invovled in such products is, studies run by the company's themselves are inherantly biased, studies run by the FDA are usually under political pressure, incomplete and often rushed, and studies run by opposing groups often find the wackiest conspiracy theory nut to run them and claim them as independant. Half of everything you read on the internet is complete rubbish and there is no sensible way to sift between the BS.

All I know is, when I'm drinking diet coke, I sleep worse, I feel worse, and I feel better when I don't drink it, but its addictive as ****. In my case its not helped by serious migraines anyway, which means the "come down" from diet coke/caffeine is almost unbearable. Also annecdotal evidence has a ridiculous number of people who quit diet soft drinks feeling generally healthier and better.

Its also clearly addictive outside of the caffeine(something in diet coke, not necessarily aspartame) as if I stop drinking coke but replace the caffeine source, I can still feel bad unless I have a little diet coke.

So to shorten that when you drink something containing a stimulant like caffeine you don't sleep as well. When you don't sleep well you feel worse and strangely when you don't have a stimulant you feel better as you have slept well ... wow that is astonishing.

OK nothing has ever being proven safe, even water. That's just the way science works.
But to all intents and purposes it has never been shown to be unsafe despite tens of millions of people drinking it every day for 20 years.

I'm not saying I trust the FDA - there are plenty of independent studies from all over the world saying the same thing, they can't all be in the drug company's pocket.

All pop/soda drinks taste like **** anyway, especially Diet Coke. They also do a load of other effects on the gastrointestinal system that would easily explain why some people get worse IBS for example.

I like coffee really as my staple drink I dont tend to go for other stuff. I can have a coffee then go all day without another and just drink water in the meantime, I enjoy the taste. My mum and mum in law both drink coffee and nothing else. They dont suffer any side effects nor crave the stuff. Some people just don't like water or other drinks.

Drink water and fruit juices.

DONT drink fruit juices.

Never had a cup of coffee in my life so can't say I miss it but have heard of people having headaches when trying to give up. Also seen people not able to function mentally at the same level if they haven't had a coffee which is one of the reasons I decided not to get into that habit (last thing you want is to depend on substances to perform).

Fruit juices and smoothies are high in sugar and low in fibre, you're better off eating the fruit and drinking water. I doubt the withdrawal symptoms will last more then a day or so, just keep your self occupied to pass the time.

I used to be a morning coffee person without fail for years. Recently I've got into green tea and can't even drink coffee anymore.

There are some proper nutters in here. Addicted to Diet Coke? Are you serious? I drink primarily sugar free squash and have done my whole life, I hate the taste of full sugar fizzy drinks (srs) but have probably 1-3 cans of Pepsi Max/Diet Coke etc. etc. a day (free at work).
It has no adverse effects on me whatsoever, the dangers of aspartame is blown so far out of proportion.
Honestly I don't understand some people nowadays, everyone's so focussed on completely the wrong - incredibly minor - health attributes but very few people even get the basics right. So many people trying to avoid gluten or some other nonsense and they couldn't even tell me their calories/macros for the day.

I used to drink near 1.5 litres of coke a day and have loved since I was a kid. Decided enough was enough and went cold turkey two years ago and haven't looked back since.

The first two days were bad with headaches and feeling really groggy, but I got over it.

Well it's not just the ingredients but it causing me to have sleepless nights. Getting rid of the acidity will help me also even if I do brush my teeth.

It is hilarious that people are freaking out over it, some of the comments in here are fantastic. Being addicted to caffeine is not a problem, it has negligible side effects and does not impair your ability to carry out your day to day activities. People drinking copious amounts of coffee are likely to be harming themselves mostly due to the diuretic effects but there is a free and widespread treatment for that (i.e. the tap).
