Hey,

Looking at installing a new stereo unit in my Golf MK4 2003.

It currently has this installed:

Want to replace the entire lot CD+Tape/Radio to JUST this (Pioneer DEH-2500UI:

Had a look on eBay and this looks like it might do the trick:
VW Golf MK4 MKIV Stereo Fitting Kit Wiring/Adaptor

BUT my confusion is, do I need to buy another Single Din Pocket on top of the one included?

Or will the new stereo unit simply replace one of the old units while the Single Din Pocket provided in the eBay kit will replace the other?

From what I remember of my sister's Mk4 Golf the radio is DIN sized, so as you say your new stereo will replace one of the old units and the pocket will replace the other.

MK4's have standard wiring so you wont need the wiring adapter. All you need to do is buy a single din pocket.

I much prefer a double din in my MK4 - makes it look a lot better! :)

I can imagine how much better that would look than a single din.

Though only issue is you can't remove the front stereo fascia for security with double din. Not sure if I trust my local residents ;)

I thought about that and then realized stereos aren't worth nicking these days, and if it was to get nicked, so be it. Someone wants it, they will get it regardless! :p

Also, I couldn't be bothered with the annoyance of the pop off. It really does just look like a standard stereo looking at it from the outside. ;)

Good point. Tempted now haha!

Do you have any photos of your single by the way?

Does the single din I buy just act as a cubby hole? The single din try isn't required for the new radio right?

Unfortunately I don't, but I hated the look of it.

Yes, the single din tray is just a pocket tray. You will need one if you go the single din stereo route.

Double din stereo, it isn't needed. :)

Has someone attacked your interior with a fork? What's gone on?

Double din can work, but tbh I only think it's worthwhile on high end units, others just look cheap.

They go straight in no messing, could try find a cubby hole off of a lesser model.

I would recommend the autoleads ISO loom though if you want your central locking to work properly :)

The black trim on Golfs does that, pretty much the worst culprit for making the interiors look old and tired.

Your other option if you feel more 'chav' is to get a single DIN radio and then fit boost gauges etc. in the top slot.

Like so - http://www.bluelion.org.uk/forumImages/r32/dials/dsc_6048.jpg

i have a mk4 golf and I can assure you the Ops condition is an exception and not the norm. Looks like someone had a go at removing/installing the stereos and couldn't get it out clean so put a screwdriver through the gaps and tried to anchor it out.

I have a Mk4 Golf too, not sure why that would really make your point any more authoritative :p I've seen more of them with tatty black trim than I have with nice looking black trim. It's ridiculously easy to make tatty. The drivers door controls are a common point as people scrabble around for the buttons.
