New GPU - £350 budget

Hey Gilljoy,

From what people have been telling me you need to make sure the 7970 you buy is unlocked voltage.

The only difference between the ghz is it has higher voltage and clock speed.

I think the gigabyte ones are now voltage locked but you would have to check with the 7970 crew.

Ahh brilliant, so get the MSI one, up the clocks and voltage and get similar performance as the 1Ghz ones and save some money. I like the sounds of that

I think most the guys at the top of the benchmarks on this site are using the reference msi 7970 for £299 with the £50 extreme aftermarket cooler.

So I'm pretty confused about the whole GHZ edition thing vs the normal edition.

I've been told by some members that its got slightly different HW where as others have told me its just factory OC'd.

Can't decide.

Its still down to a 7970 or a GTX 680

LtMatt, end thread/

Joking but only about the end thread part :p.

LtMatt has the MSI OC card @ £299 on This Week Only. I'm sure he fitted a new cooler onto it as the 7970 fan is slightly more audible than the GTX 680. If you look at the Heaven thread (http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18489026), you'll see that his non Ghz edition is beating up all the other cards. That benchmark isn't a one off either.

I'm actually thinking of selling my 680s and moving to 7970s, will be buying tomorrow while still on offer. Not that I need too as gaming is fine, just they are better cards and the 7970 I had was a Sapphire reject/lemon/Tommy's 7950s big brother. It should cost me nothing to sell and buy so why not?. But then I'm feeling insane as I run my cards at 1330Mhz for gaming so would I see a difference. Anyway sorry, I've been a bit selfish here but I hope my questioning of what to do will spur you on that If it were my money right now, you know where it would be going :).

Nvidia all the way. I am sure you can still find a 580 GTX for about £400 in some weird online shop.

Dont buy 7970. They are way faster than any available to buy Nvidia card and cheaper too.
