EDIT: and what work rates are best for the 3 CMs in a 4321 which i want to try out.
I have tried using Fellaini but I just found his to be playing matrix football
I find Fellaini incredible. So strong! Just walk him into an opponent with the ball and he will come out with the ball and the other lad will be on the ground and unable to chase back!
And that's just the NIF...
edit: I play him at CDM in 41212. Not as great at CM, not very fast or good at shooting for me.
I'll forget about 4-2-2-2 then. So, looking at 4-1-2-1-2, with a defensive midfielder, some width with LM and RM, and a CAM behind the strikers, that looks quite good.4222 is pretty much the same without the CF holding the ground between the midfield and defence. I didn't find it anywhere near as effective. 4312 is really narrow but if you get it in and around the CF you'll often outnumber the defence which is useful. I don't like 433 but it does give you lots of width.
I have Cazorla and Isco as CAM's.If your CAMs are too far back in 4231, what players are you using?

i was thinking of getting SIF Cazorla and SIF Fellani has CMs.

Yup, that's exactly how I feel too. In an ideal world I'd rather have the playmaker in the middle of the 3, so I don't feel I'm always playing through one side of my team, but I think if I had my ball winner anywhere other than the middle, they'd not be as effective (and the opposition would just play around them easier). Those look good Tim.
I see it as having a defender, a playmaker and a runner for a well balanced midfield 3!
