Flying to Sydney, Emirates or Singapore Airlines?

Emirates are brilliant, I went with them recently to Melbourne, Australia.

There were delays, but this was due to weather and Manchester Airport.

I flew from Manchester to Dubai, was a 5 hour delay as it was snowing really bad several weeks ago. Emirates called all of their passengers to the customer service desk, which then they gave us a £7.50 voucher which was for food and drinks. - To be honest I wasn't expecting this as I understood as to why there was a delay, Manchester Airport closed the runway and the snow was extremely heavy.

So as a nice gesture the 5 hours flew by, due to eating and chatting to other passengers.

Got on the plane and my window was iced up, had to wait until they finished de-icing the plane. The pilot explained pretty much everything that was happening so we understood.

On the 777-300ER you do have USB chargers and normal plug sockets. Managed to get this photo in Manchester, got some more coming back on the A380-800.

Also all the planes I went on had plenty of leg room, a bit more could have been better for me maybe, but I am 6.4" tall. :p

The dinners were nice, you got the choice for the main meal between 2 meals, so you will more than likely enjoy one of the meals, you get metal knifes and forks too!

They offer you hot hand towels quite often so you feel refreshed and clean.

So I got to Dubai... Missed my connection flight to Melbourne due to delays in Manchester.

When at Dubai, I had to basically wait a whole evening till the flight the next morning. Emirates put me up in a 4 star hotel. I had basically an apartment for myself, 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, walk in wardrobe, kitchen, living room and dining room.

Considering all of this was provided for free, it isn't too bad. :)

You are probably thinking... Why would I want to fly with them due to all the problems there were, well yes there were problems, just the delay which made me miss my connection flight. However the way it was all handled was excellent, and I felt comfortable at all times considering I was left in Dubai on my own and had no idea what to do.

On the way back it was smoother, by then the snow was gone in the UK and the flight was on time.

This was the Airbus A380-8000...

On all planes you have camera views from your seat, all the latest and oldest music, films and games. The touch screen device was okay, but the touch was a little unresponsive which was a bit frustrating at times.

The camera views...

And yes, Emirates are kind enough for you to take a picture of the cockpit once landed at the destination. :)

So basically, with or without issues, they are absolutely brilliant, and next time I fly over to Australia, I am sticking with them.

I just did economy class in Singapore and both business and economy in Emirates I would fly Singapore next time. Much better food, service was better and overall a better experience.

5UB - you should forward that on to their customer services department. Nice to hear firms playing the game properly, and goes to show that hopefully they'll retain any future custom.

... or maybe they knew you were the customer services guru at OCUK and did not want to offend :p

I was on an A380 3 weeks ago and tbh once you're in the air you could be on any other plane , the leg room didn't feel much different to the 777-300 I was on the previous flight

I've flew on both of them planes to and from Dubai and they ate both great, not much between them. More than enough legroom for a 6'2 man (me).

It was with emerites too (they have a380"s too).

The flights were great, service was spot on and had lots of good films to watch.

Did it the other day. :)

They are legally obliged to put you up and provide food vouchers in the case of delays though :p

That is what I thought, but the organisation and level of service and politeness was great. I know that is their job too, but it doesn't harm to show appreciation. :)

Flown with both, I think you'd be happy with either. I'd choose which ever is cheaper or best suited schedule. I did once get a free upgrade to 1st class on Emirates though, couldn't take the grin off my face

I actually just got back from Japan last weekend and flew with Lufthansa, I have to say they were amazing. A380s so plenty of choice for entertainment, the flight attendants were top notch, good food and free drink of course, also they have metal sporks!
Best bit though is that I returned from Japan with 3 x checked in luggage, including one oversized and they didn't mind at all, no charge :D
Also pretty cheap, was £570 return.

You're absolutely right, well done mate. Far too often we will complain when something is out of place, but rarely do we congratulate when recieve high levels of customer service. Nice of you to pass on your thanks, and I'll definately consider Emirates in the future after your review

Also something on the side, in the middle isle a passenger was having some trouble, the hostess' were treating them medically. Not sure what the issue was, but they brought through breathing apparatus, and they were treating a passenger on the flight while calling down to a hospital. They laid the person on the floor too, it must have been some heart/breathing problem. But for 3 hostess' to be tied up with this, while maintaining great level of service throughout was great.

I'm a huge Emirates fan, i find the service spot on and the planes top notch.

For this reason they are my prefered airline, though Singapore are excellent too.

Have flown both and have to say both are excellent, flown Emirates to Dubai a few times but havent flown them to Australia yet. But like Singapore their service is brilliant.

Last Sept i flew from Heathrow to Brisbane via Singapore Airlines and i enjoyed the flight, was long and tiring but loved the service from singapore airlines..nothing was ever too much for them and damn they keep feeding you constantly:p. Flew on the A380 and was on the top deck where they have econo seats so was brilliant. Had a 5 hr stop over in Singapore then changed to another singapore flight to Brisbane...think it was the A330 this time round and again another superb flight...gave us magnum ice cream which was brilliant i thought.

Flight back was again with Singapore and again cannot fault them for their brilliant service.

I'm flying LHR to SYD (return) for the third time in 12 months this June. I flew with Etihad on the previous two occasions via Abu Dhabi. Total flight time circa 25 hours. Excellent service. A mix of 777's and A340's.

Decided to fly Qantas this time on an A380 via Dubai (for fuelling). Flight time circa 22hrs (only 20hrs 40mins flying east!). £799.25 return - leaving early June, returning early July.

I chose between Etihad, BA, Emirates and Qantas primarily but also looked at Virgin (Atlantic and Australia) and Cathay Pacific. Emirates are codeshare with Qantas, so you'll find a large amount of their London <-> Sydney flights are operated by Qantas anyway. No point paying extra via another airline. Although I can't say there was a massive difference anyway (up to £200 extra total).

Its easy to see which ones it is. Essentially, if its not via Dubai (or its advertised as 'direct' because a direct flight requires a refuelling stop), it's a codeshare with Qantas.
