Hi guys,

Getting a tad worried of late as noticed my temps were pretty high in Crysis 3, around 85c so decided to try temps out in furmark to see what it would reach and it hit 96c.

This is a totally stock, never overclocked card. Its the Gainward 'GOOD' edition if that makes any odds (non reference design)

I have read these cards are safe up to 98c but this is cutting it a tad close I reckon! My case is the Corsair 800d which I know is not great for air cooling but wondered what you guys thought?

I regularly clean my pc with a data vac cleaner so it is very clean and free of dust.

The card idles at around 35c.

Cheers.

Sounds high tbh. Probably poor heatsink contact with the GPU core.

Actually, 85c. hmm whats your fan configuration in the 800d? as below, furmark is BS.

Hi all,

Thanks for all the quick replies!

Furmark was maxed out at 1920x1080 and 8xmsaa fyi.

In games it gets up to a max of 85-87c in heavy GPU laden games like Crysis 3 and The Witcher 2. BF3 aswell.

I know that Furmark isn't really 'real-world' usage but I wanted to compare to others.

At 96c the GPU fan was at 75%. I dont really want to get into custom fan profiles purely out of noise/I dont see that I should have to really....especially with a stock graphics card.

The 800D is stock at the time of running the test. Though I do have 3 akasa top mounted fans bringing cool air into the case. Wierd I know, but when testing in summer it actually cooled the case down more than when the fans were in an exhaust config.

Im gonna take a look at the gpu later today and check that the fan is clear of all dust but like I say it should be already....

Ben

Like others have said, "Furmark should be banned/uninstalled" it is a GPU killer.

Have you set a fan profile with MSI Afterburner or Precision X? It may not be ramping up quick enough and idealy, you want to keep it under 70c.

High end discrete GPU's aren't designed to cope with stress tests like Furmark anymore, it would just add extra cost to cooling and VRM design. Furmark is only a GPU killer in the sense that modern GPU's are purposely under designed.

Furmark will make your VC get very HOT.

Most VC's today do not have adequate cooling to run stress tests like Furmark for long periods.
It is down to costs really, we as consumers wonldn't pay the extra or accept lower clocked cards.

Manfactures take a chance on the cooling solutions provided and for 99.9% of users there adequate.

Furmark is the VC equivalent of P95 or IBT.
Would you be happy if your CPU couldn't run P95 because of temps ?
Are you happy your VC can't ?

Most folks wouldn't be happy that there CPU overheats on stress tests but are happy to accept there VC will.

Get MSI Afterburner with software fan control enabled.

Thanks for all the responses guys.

So I get that this is not something to worry about really due to the fact that Furmark is a bit unreasonable for current GPU's?

I havnt installed msi afterburner as I didnt think I should have to mess with custom fan profiles on a stock card....and also due to the length of card life-would it be affected by increasing the fan speed? It got up to 75% (hurricane) at 96c anyway.

In gaming an real world it gets to a top of about 85-87c in a very demanding game so perhaps that is okay? I just worry that when summer comes and ambient rises it will be an issue in games?

Those temps are too high just for gaming. I would ask for an RMA because of the temps or if you feel your case cooling is poor, do the same tests with the side of the case off. When summer gets here, it will only esculate.

Regardless, I would want it swapped or sorted. Maybe poor TIM or poor contact on the cooler/GPU.

Thanks for the response Gregster.

What temps would you want during gaming? My case is the 800D which is known for less than best cooling. The games that push it that much are Crysis 3 and TW2.

Ben

Having owned a 3 * 680's , I would look to 75c max temps whilst gaming on GPU dependant titles. The card throttles back at 70c and those temps you are seeing are just too high. Even if case cooling is poor, 85c is still too high.

Just to see if it helps, play something like Crysis 3 with the side of the case off and see if it helps. At least you can get a better idea if it will happen again.

I assume the card is the reference style blower, which exhausts out the back of the case?

Okay buddy- will try now.

Yep it is exhaust out the back of the case. Gave the fan a good clean and its knocked 3c of the furmark score (wahey) but not much improvement.

Will try side off now.

Ben

Probably better to find out now because come the summer, that will be shut downs and no gaming :(

True.

I phoned support-geez customer service has gone way down  -and seems it is high but after taking the side of my case off it dropped it by 6c. So 89/90c in Furmark as oppose to what it was earlier.

Crysis 3 hovering at 75c.

Looks like a case issue?

Providing you put the extra fans in the top of the 800D it is not that bad at keeping cards cool. I also use the 800D and don't have any problem with 2 GTX 690s keeping them cool.

I actually have some akasa ones at the top, as exhaust fans. Problem is they produce f'all air flow.

What fans do you use Kaapstad? And are they exhaust or intake? (I tried intake in the past and it wasnt great).

P.s. what are your 690temps at load?
