narrowed my new car list down to 3 which one would you get ?

BMW 116d EfficientDynamics 3-door Sports Hatch

or

A1 S line 1.6 TDI 5 speed

or

last on list ford fiesta zetec s 1.6 TDCi

went to check some cards at weekend, just after a smallish sized 3 door diesel, tempted by the price and spec on the fiesta but like the look of the audi and bmw could prob just stretch to buying a bmw just, but have only ever driven Vauxhall only thing I was worried about is the claimed mpg and the real life actual mpg anyone have one of these cars and can remember roughly what your getting ?

If I absolutely had to buy one of them it'd be the ugly as sin 1 series seeing as they've ruined the fiestas front end, the ford engine is even worse than the other two and I couldn't bring myself to spend anything like that on a fiesta.

It does seem an extreme amount of money to spend on that type of car but that's your call I guess

The 116d ED is not a particularly great car to buy yourself. It exists to give company users a low tax option. It's very much the bottom of the range. The A1 you've suggested is a higher trim level.
 
The 116ed is pretty much identical to the SE spec. I work with someone who owns one and he's averaging 68mpg from 10,000 miles.

As Fox says - it is not the car to buy as a private buyer. It's aimed squarely at the company car market.
 
What made you choose diesel? Some small petrol engined cars can match diesel consumptions these days and don't have the problems with short trips or potential expensive service costs.

I own an A1 and much as I dislike the BMW 1 series the A1 is not in the same league - more of a competitor for the A3.

£18k on any one of these cars is madness though.
 
regarding the audi / bmw comment do you mean the bmw is better ?
reason i wanted economy so theres more to spend on other things

what would you get then ?
 
How many miles per annum are you expecting to do?

I can think of a whole raft of cars on which I'd rather ***** £18k on but none of them would be a 1.6 diesel.

To take the main point of the slightly more harsh comments back a little, you should consider whether it's worth spending £18k + interest for a lower apparent monthly outgoing (but over a longer period of time and ultimately costing significantly more) or whether buying a car at say half of that value and paying it off quicker / keeping your money in the bank makes more sense.



Of course if you're looking for a nearly new car that you'll get rid of when it's out of warranty and that's just what you want then tbh you'll need to spend more, though personally I'd look at some more pleasant engines. Even if it needs to be diesel these are all particularly crap to have to punt around.

Don't be blinded by £0/ low low low road tax and 99.99999mpg, ultimately you'll struggle to achieve the mpg and the saving is outweighed significantly by the greater cost of the car and any borrowing against that.

I'll be paying cash for it , ATM I'm driving a vectra 2ltr diesel, 70k miles and get 55mpg out of it and do about 10k a year, just got a pay increase and wanted to replace it for something smaller as I've had my fun with cars when I was younger , i've owned a dodge challenger 440 six pack , Alfa cloverleafs , Pontiac fiero v6 in the past.

Just need a better looking more eco friendly car to make the grind more easy :). After destroying the atmosphere with my 9mpg challenger
 
Am I right in thinking you could get one of the new polo blue GTs brand new within budget. It'll do nearly diesel economy without the usual diesel problems and has a nice amount of power for its size. Just had a look at the volkswagen website and the base model is 17400 but im sure it could be had for less. Far better than a 1.6 Diesel anyway.
 
Spend half that on a hatch with a nice engine and have a massive fuel budget with all that change sloshing around.

He wants to be an econut and save the planet, I think a large engine is the total opposite what he requires.

Nissan leaf would be perfect :rolleyes:
 
The polo GT mentioned above looks a good little motor actually, no diesel either though I'm not sure i'd fancy owning one out of warranty with the cylinder shut off tech.

Prius could well be another shout if a new( or nearly) car with eco credentials is what you want to spend the cash on. It's bigger and comfier too - infact I'd buy one that's a couple of years old and keep about £8k of your money in the bank.
