Hi Guys

Just hoping some people can help me make a decission.

I am looking for a card which wont cost me a lot to keep me going until i have enough cash to build a new machine. I have a 1st gen i5 with 16gb of 1333 ram its a dell vorto - i got it free from work - we had a clear out. I have a GTX460 to put in it at the moment but ive got 5 months to go till i get married and just need to be able to keep up with some games.

So the MSI GTX660 Twin Frzr is 172 quid or the MSI 7950 Twin Frzr is 240ish but i cant make up my mind... the 660 will be physics ready but then the 7950 is maybe a slightly better card.

I would have a look at the dells PSU first and see what the wattage on the 12v rail is and if it has any pci-e power connectors.

PhysX won't really be around for much longer to be honest, and it's barely used at it is, and since the PS4 reveal, it's cemented the end of PhysX pretty strongly, as the consoles all use AMD hardware now, so there's no chance PhysX will be running on the consoles. nVidia could open it up, but really I don't think they will because they don't do sharing.

Yea thats a fair point over the physx.

I know the PSU on the dell is shocking - i have a 500w psu which i am going to use - not amazing its a budget PSU but for the purpose of having a running machine it will do.

cant quite workout though is the ATI cards better than nvidia? are there better cards than the MSI - i know a few people who have twin frozr cards and they say they are good.

Physx is really great if you play any of the few games that has it in like batman/borderlands 2 and I'm sure nvidia will keep using it in more games.

The 7950 will be a lot more powerful than a 660.

The 660 is on par with the 7850

The twin frozr is a great cooler and msi seem to have great customer services.

I just sold my msi 660ti twin frozr and that was a great card :)

They've had years to use it, and they've just not put it to any meaningful usage, and really they won't be able to push it because the consoles won't be using PhysX as the hardware physics API.

Disagree
borderlands 2 physx are simply amazing :) and don't forget this only got released 6 months ago.

Physx wasn't in last gen consoles so whats the difference now.

Physx is just a marketing toy for Nvidia to sell GPU's. There is no reason it could not be included on AMD gpu's. The new consoles are meant to be using some new fangled system to employ physics and as they are using AMD GPU's I imagine this tech will find it's way to the pc.

In short the 7950 is the one to get but personally I would get a 7870 and a better Psu.

Because the consoles are moving towards usage of hardware physics, and it's certainly not going to be PhysX. Basically, PhysX has always been limited by the fact that it's locked to nVidia.

No developer would use PhysX in a way that changes gameplay because of how it wouldn't be available to all users, AMD cards can't run it, so PC exclusives aren't going to have PhysX effects that NEED to always be on because it then means people with AMD cards can't play the game, if you get what I mean?

I think the effects in Borderlands 2 look nice, it's not really a dig a physics effects, it's just the way it's been used, and Borderlands is one of very few games that actually makes use of PhysX on the GPU anyway.

But I think amazing is quite a bit exaggeration, I'd say nice, or cool really.

Sounds more like what you want to happen than what actually goes on.

Not sure if you have played through the whole game with physx on high with an nvidia card or not but I can tell you I found it amazing and it's much better than what you see in any of the videos.

No it's a fact. No developer uses PhysX to an extent that changes the gameplay, and is required as an integral part of the game.

This will be the downfall of PhysX, because with the consoles using hardware physics, that isn't going to be PhysX, there's little to no reason for its continued use.

Maybe if you found it amazing, you've not played other games with physics in it. For example, Crysis 3 has some nice physics, all done on the CPU.

I have played many games and none compare to true physx like in borderlands 2 this is just a random video I found on youtube of 1 person single player game.

Then what you need to imagine is later in the game with much better weapons (more effects more particles) and then 4 player coop and the amount of stuff flying round the screen is unreal and far beyond what any other games can do.

I also enjoy the PhysX effects in some of the TWIMTBP titles. I am not a fan of BL2 but the PhysX effects do look sweet. I linked some vids a while back to some of the effects and there is some gems out there like Alice Madness returns and Hawken which looks real good with PhysX on.

Yes I went and got batman after I see the video you put up lol

Some more big titles later this year like metro and lost planet which are games I'm looking forward to.

All this physx talk is making me want to get the 670 instead of the 7970 next week :) It's not like I need anymore frames for my 1080p 60hz plasma.

I am sure you will enjoy the 7970 just as much. You can get work arounds to get PhysX to work on the CPU and this should help if you still want the PhysX effects :)

Not sure how you do it though.

@OP,

If your not going to change your no name 500w psu, the cheaper 660 with less power draw would be a better bet, your used to the Nvidia setup anyway.

Then get the 670 instead, one things for sure, 'IF' TRESSFX isn't locked to AMD gpu's-I don't think it will be, you get the best of both worlds on the 670.

Spoffles correct that PhysX doesn't get used to it's potential, but nonetheless-you enjoy what PhysX brings, that's the main thing at the end of the day, personal taste/enjoyment.

Why we are PC gamers?

Because to an extent we can use something if we want to or not.
