What's your policy on homeless people

I usually have a few of them along a big street which has my local shops, ive walked past minding my own buisness with my earphones in listening to music, and because i hadnt looked at them or responded they hurl abuse at me every swear word under the sun... not sure how them doing that would bring out my good nature..

another story a friend of mine saw a homeless guy he asked him for some change for food, he was eating a mars bar and said he found it in the bin, he felt sorry for him and gave him couple quid, later that day my mate saw him pulling sob story on another person..

I don't give any money away, I earn it, what isn't raped off me in taxes, get spent on me and my loved ones.

Also, all the big issue sellers in Newcastle city centre are foreign and can't speak much English, I'm pretty sure we have enough home grown homeless people who could be doing that instead, that we don't need imported homeless people.

I've never actually seen a homeless person in the flesh. We must not get the much up here.

I'd give em a fiver if I saw one. I know it would go to fags or booze tho but, it's still a good deed of the day :-)

If I have some spare change, I give it to them, depending in what im doing this can be £1 to maybe £5, If I am at the pub, and I come out, then I will drop them a £5-£10 and have a chat.

I don't care if the buy Drink or Crystal meth, its their money to do with what they will, I just hope it makes it a little better for them, especially in winter.

we cant be too quick to judge, a lot of these people have had a hard time, with mental illness, and drug abuse.

I bet they thought this would never happen to them ehh? just like me and you.

I don't think I've ever actually seen a female homeless person. I wonder why they are much less prominent? Of course they must exist.

I give a few quid to them here and there, I tend not to buy the big issue as most sellers of it round her seem to be eastern European.

I don't look down on them, I can see how it can happen so easily, if not for my family I think I may have ended up that way after separating from my wife. Going from having everything to nothing can be easier than some of you think and nothing to do with choices you may make, separation, redundancy, think about it.
Even the drinkers have my sympathy, we drink to forget how rubbish stuff is sometimes, being homeless is pretty much as low as it gets.

Possibly the most sensible and accurate post in this thread.

I don't give them anything, the same way you shouldn't feed foxes. I feel for those who hit hard times but in this day and age there is zero reason to be sat on the street unless you prefer it to getting off your arse and doing something about your plight

Depends how early in the month it is, if I've got spare cash, I'll buy em a beer or something. I know I'd love a beer if I lived on the streets.

Just lol.

I suppose you give money to charities feeding the starving in Africa too, elmarko?

If you feel strongly about the homeless, give money to Shelter or something. Giving it directly to someone on rock bottom is like giving razor blades to the suicidal

Don't give to them directly but we donate to St Mungo’s.

Thanks I'll look that up.

The thing with homeless people is, given a few bad pieces of luck any one of us could become homeless.

My fiancée’s uncle and auntie (dad's brother) used to be a real high flyers back in the Soviet days. When perestroika came in they lost everything. The chauffeur, the tennis club membership, the fur coats, the lot.

They couldn't stand the shame so they emigrated to Denmark only to be moved into a pretty squalid tenement refugee style place, which they couldn’t stand. It was only for my fiancée’s Dad giving them a place to live for 2 years in one room of his two room apartment that stopped the family becoming homeless.

Throughout history dehumanisation has been used to allow and encourage despicable things to happen to other people. Homeless people are not akin to foxes.

I suppose you support the recent squatting law?

I suppose he has no objection to the concentration camps to be honest.

Remember, don't feed the trolls.

Dehumanisation? No, just not enabling people to continue on a destructive path. The homeless often have more profound problems than not having a home. Giving them cash is only going to prolong their homelessness. Is that a good outcome? What is wrong with the fox analogy? Give them food and they will remain where you fed them and in greater numbers. Like I said above, if they tug your heart strings give some money to Shelter or any number of charities doing good work for the homeless. Giving it directly to someone on the street might make you feel all fuzzy and warm as you hop into your car with a £3 Starbucks coffee in hand but are you really helping them?

Magnolia, that's an issue for another thread. Plaster on gaping head wound springs to mind

e: Yes, I guess having a common sense, non fluffy-minded leftist outlook means I am a Holocaust apologist
