tldr: Toothache sucks.

I have been through a lot of pain in my life through broken bones and a quite severe illness but nothing could prepare me for the toothache I have been through. I am not looking for medical advice!

On Monday night at 1am all hell broke loose...it felt like someone was using one of those road hammer drills on my face.....cold water seemed to offer a 10second calming sensation....4 litres of water later, getting worse...turn to internet...tried everything from salt water to brushing it hard to vodka...nope getting worse, so back to water. In that time was waiting for NHS direct to call back. Finally spoke to someone in the know, who said my nerve was basically in trouble...and told me I had to get through this wave of pain...now the next 2 minutes are probably the worst feeling I hacve ever had...I imagine it's like what being hit by a train, whilst being burnt, stabbed, drilled in your brain and having your scrotum ripped off feels like. To compound it I thought it would be a good idea to take 8 iboprofen in a few hours and 2 paracetmol, which made the next day feel like I had woken in a heroin addicts' den. It did eventually knock me out thankfully.

Turns out once I was able to get to dentist early on Tuesday my wisdom tooth had basically fouled the molar next to it. Now I need a tooth taken out, a root canal and a crown done to repair the damage.

I have to survive until next Tuesday, the wave of pain which is like the graph of y = tan x (grows and grows then at tan 90 is undefined, then suddenly back to no pain). I am scared to eat anything...just had a small sandwich and that was a task and a half!

In the past if you didn't have teeth you would die from starvation. I suppose this is the way of nature telling you that you have to deal with it right now otherwise you will be in big trouble.

Apparently it's quite common where the wisdom tooth sometimes grows diagonally. In my case it was not expected to cause an issue so soon as now.

I am doing it privately as I don't want to wait and I am not sporting a silver crown. Thought it would be loads but it's about £1,100 or so.

Will get dental insurance through work going forward :P

I've pulled some of mine out myself because they hurt so much so I know your pain. Once I pulled one out I stuck it on the side & shouted YOU can't hurt me now can you you *******.

Also it's not the worst pain out there, Having Kidney stones is a Lot worse. Had one of those as well & passed it after 8 months of 3 days of hell & 7 days Ok then 3 days of Hell rinse & repeat for 8 months. :(

You'll be in even more pain after it's been taken out.

I had a wisdom tooth out last Wednesday and developed dry socket. I've been in agony since.

The best thing to do is man up and stop acting like a bitch.

You know when you cut yourself/break a bone etc its sudden, intense pain, which quickly fades to a persistent throb? Proper toothache is like the first intense pain, only it persists. It drowns out anything you try to do to distract yourself. I went through this myself recently and there were points I would have given away my house to make it stop. Its literal torture.

Aslong as the dentist does their job proper the nerve pain will be gone tho which is the really bad bit, any resulting discomfort from the removal will fade away over a couple of days unless something goes really wrong.

It does rank up there pretty high on the pain scale. The only way to effectively deal with it really is painkillers - NHS direct would be able to advise - most other "home" remedies will give very short temporary relief at best.

I used to get something frozen like a bag of peas or summit out the freezer then wrap a T towel round it then lay down with my jaw on the T towel, I'd wake up an hour or 2 later on a soggy wet T towel. :p

I had a very similar thing where 2 of my teeth were too close together and were not being cleaned correctly despite me flossing and using mouth wash. Eventually the one cracked and it hurt to even breath, The pain was horrendous. I went to the dentist and had to have a root canal done and a cap put on. Although it seems the cap was done badly as its starting to come away in parts and My tooth is hurting and bleeding so back to the dentist I go :(

Had nearly the same thing but in a different order.

Had root canal filling which got infected caused my face to swell looking like the elphant mans good looking brother. I had a impacted wisdom tooth that wasnt noticed and it caused all sorts of issues. I was in pain for 3 months while I had my root canal redone 3 threes while the infection was controlled and then the wisdom tooth exacted which had caused my jaw issues. That was three months of hell. But I handled it like a man and just cried on the inside lol. I was given codeine to help me sleep at night as after a week of not sleeping I started to struggle. If your in that much pain your dentist should have given you something btw.

Either your dentist is a evil person or your a women. /Internet hardman :p

Absolutely! Woke up with a kidney stone Xmas day 2010, living nightmare! Tooth abscess is the only other pain I've had that came close.

I sympathize. I've had wisdom teeth coming through for eons, and I still have three to emerge fully, two of which will require hospital treatment. I rarely have any significant pain, but on the couple of occasions that I have, pain killers proved to be the only saviour - just. Clove oil did next nothing, and aside from the difficulty of getting it, I very much doubt white willow would have acted quickly enough.
