Bye E92, Hello XF?

5.0 V8 is more efficient than the earlier 4.2. The 5.0 V8 has almost as much power as the 4.2SC. I get early 20's average out of mine.

I set cruise to 50 in motorway roadworks and it indicated just over 30mpg over about 3 or 4 miles, which is pretty good as the best I ever managed out of E55/ E60 M5 / E39 M5 was 25/26mpg in similar conditions.

Its not exactly efficient but you did say that mid-teens was a bit low for you rather than far too low! When I was looking to XFS's it seemed that most users reported mid 30's with average use, some up to 40mpg, but then by the sounds of it they were driving it sedately.

I'd look at a minimum of the PL spec as it comes with a much better specification than the luxury. If you can find one with the sports pack interior that worth getting as well as the seats are much better than the standard ones.

If you do look at the luxury spec car, I'd check the sound system out, if it has the 140w system then it's not very good at all. Prem Lux gives you the 320w as standard which is much better sounding, I couldn't really tell any difference between the 320w and 440w in terms of quality, just a bit louder.

You sir need your ears testing ;)

The S seems to average around 38-40 on long trips from what I've seen on various XF forums, which for a car that does 5.9 0-60 and not far off 300bhp, is still pretty good

Our MD here owns an XF (not S), on a long run think he can get 44mpg, his usual journeys I think are in the 35mpg range, short distance town driving too and from work.

I suspect S will be similar, you'll certainly struggle to get 50mpg unless your trying to hyper-mile it on the motorway.

I dont think there are any 5.0 in my price range :p

one on autotrader at £19k.

I paid £20k for mine a year ago and it was a 58 plate with 30k miles on. Problem is that not many come on and many sellers have an inflated view on the pricing of them. When I was looking the equivalent XFS - 58 plate 30k mile Portfolio - was about £25k, hence my decision was made easier. :)

It probably depends what you're listening to too :p

All I had to test was Radio 2 and the 140w sounded pants. The other two sounded equally as nice, but neither were as good as the BOSE system I had in my A6. I ended up buying a PL with the 320w, and I certainly never feel like I've got a bad system. If/when I get a newer XF I'd be looking for the 1200w.

I agree the 140w is awful, almost as bad as the standard BMW systems from the E46/E90 but not quite...

You feed the 440w B&W system a decent input like 320Kbps MP3 or lossless and the difference is immense. I have a lossless version of Queens greatest hits and the level of detail was incredible. My current PL has the 600w mid-range system and I wish I'd managed to get the B&W system instead as the difference is very noticeable. The new Meridian system they use is meant to be good but not up to the top end B&W system that was discontinued in the MY13 cars. The B&W system in the XJ is something else as well, even over the one in the XF.

I have just swapped a fully loaded XFR for a BMW 135i
I was doing a lot of city driving and was seeing as low as 9mpg in the Jag. This would rise to 25mpg on motorway. Driving like miss daisy would get me 30mpg at a constant 50 mph :( no fun in that and defeats the point of buying the car.

The 135i is nearly as quick to 60, handles much better and is getting up to 30mpg around town.

I had the 440W B&O system in the jag and the Harmon Kardon system in the BMW, there is very little between them, the jag had more dynamic range, but the bass is much more powerful and tighter in the BMW.

30mpg around town from a 135i? What?

I got 20mpg around town from a 335i with the same engine! Is this another one of those where pottering around the bypass with the engine nice and warm counts as 'town' driving? :p

Agreed. I get about 22 - 26 when town driving in my Z.

Mixture of country lanes and little villages with speed humps every 100m

Don't forget I am now a master at economical driving after owning the XFR. :) I had a few 500 mile weeks that started to sting

Around town isn't driving around a town, it's driving in a town, with traffic and lights and queues, there are no country lanes or villages in a town.

If "around town" can mean rural roads then why does no one ever say "on a run" when they mean in rush hour traffic?

Just checked what my current average is over about 5,000 miles and its sitting at 34.9mpg thats a combination of driving including both town and motorway.
