Just been introduced to a Scott Speedster 40, it looks to have the same spec as the bike I've been looking at, Fuji Sportif 1.3 Compact.

Is there a reason to go one over the other? Both are priced at £700, cycle scheme.

I think the Scott looks better than the Fuji aesthetically. Is the Scott available as a compact rather than triple? Triple is a bit overkill!

I do believe the one mentioned is a compact, I don't need a triple. Will go into shop to ride it this Fri. Aesthetically, both look fine to me... One from each different shop, so it might boil down to which shop offers me a better accessories deal.

Since I'm sitting in waiting for deliveries today I decided to strip my commuter for a clean and rebuild

As I said a while back, the winter salt has eaten it alive this year. Here are the rear stays:

Yuck:

Mmmm, that's better. Reynolds 531 and Made in England, back when it was ok for that to happen:

So this is the first time I've stripped it right back to bare components with the headset out. I stuck the frameset on the scales and it comes in at 1.9kg for the frame and 800g for the forks. The forks are almost certainly chromoly and not 531 at that weight, but I won't bother changing them because I'm not chasing weight on this bike now I'm using bigger, more robust tyres. The total weight of the bike sits at about 9.5kg which is fine for a commuter.

So the plans. I need to spray the frame; I'm going to rub it back and spray it in a lot of gloss black with a ton of clear on top. It's in satin black at the moment which has lasted 5 years since I last sprayed it, but I didn't put a lot on, it's slightly porous and it needs something a bit more durable. Everything else is pretty much up for a clean, re-grease and tighten. It needs a new headset because the old one is very notchy, a new set of cables is in order and if I see a good derailleur on eBay then I'll nab it. The wheels are still holding up well and, apart from a damn good clean, don't need any attention.

I fully intend to. I'm going to buy the bits for and build a decent ally bike next year, and then a fixie/singlespeed (with a flop flub hub) the following year. I reckon I can do it for £3-400.

Well, yeah it is, but I can live with it, anything else? Any idea if the frame itself is any good?

Meh :)

Given the difference in price between this and for example the CAADX are Cannondale just making more money or is there genuinely a difference in the performance of the frames that would matter to me?

Have done some more looking, and come to conclusion that this is probably the best buy IMO

tempted to do mine, was quoted £50 to get it done properly but as the frames too big for me I CBA with that.
how did you do yours and what paint did you use?

Do me a favour uniQ and fill out this short survey:

Where do you live?
Is your house alarmed?
Do you have a dog?

It's for purely research purposes, honest!

DA 9000 Shifting... So nice :p

Less than a Canyon SLX 9.0 and .5kg lighter :)

;)

Hope we get some nice weather this weekend so I can take it for a spin up some hills :)

Even the tyres are lined up correctly against the valve stems; someone has taken their time to put that together. Proper job.

I've not had a bottle leap out of a cage, but I have had a cheap plastic cage completely give up the ghost when I hit a patch of rough tarmac on the delightful A6. It was the cage on the seat tube and the bottom of it just completely snapped off and the bottle went bouncing off onto the pavement.

Thermos? I'm impressed you're still on the bike in your 70s.

the main guy i ride with is 73, and hes still stronger than me, hes really fit!!

Wow, that does look really good and Merlin do cyclescheme too, thanks for that. One other thing, is it worth the wheel upgrade to mavic aksiums? From what I can find the supra wheels will be about the same weight, maybe slightly less, is there anything else to suggest going for the mavics instead?
