As I see it, all you're doing is diluting the severity of her punishment by misrepresenting the facts. The discussion is now about 'why' she was given the punishment and not about the punishment itself.

I'm not married and I had sex with my Girlfriend whilst in the Maldives.

I bet they dont publish that you cant have sex out of wedlock so dont come here on holiday

No corporal punishment
No laws based on the words of a dusty old 'Haynes guide to being a thought free sheep'
No praying to fresh air five times a day by law
Taking rape seriously from the victim's point of view
Our women can walk the streets whenever they want, alone, dressed how they like (within reason)
Sex before marriage = fine
Mis-treatment of women/children = abuse = illegal
Animals aren't deliberately put through an excruciating death to satisfy the aforementioned guide to being a drone

The list goes on. Despite the fact we have chav families, a small, but still regrettable nonetheless amount of serious crime, and a few rogue nutters, I'd say we're a pretty damn civillised county and many countries could learn a lot from how we conduct ourselves.

Except when we're on holiday abroad, of course.

No it didn't. The sentence is for the consensual sex she had with some other guy:

A Maldives court has sentenced a 15-year-old alleged rape victim to 100 lashes and house arrest after she admitted having premarital sex in a separate incident.

During a police probe into allegations the girl had been raped by her stepfather, investigators uncovered evidence that she had had consensual sex with another man.

It also mentions that this stricter interpretation of Islamic law is very new, and although the article doesn't mention it that ironically it has come about really since they constituted a fundamental human rights law, whereas before they simply folllowed a more liberal form of Islam.
 
Couldn't care less what crime she committed, I will never accept corporal punishment in any form, regardless of country or culture.

Any "culture" which still performs it has no place in the modern world and deserved any ridicule it receives.

Edit: Let me quickly clarify that I have no problem with the law, it is purely the punishment.

We went to the Maldives on honeymoon, beautiful place.

Doesn't mean I agree with what happened or their justice system. What a stupid thing to advise people against. While we're at it, don't go to the USA they'll make you fat ;)

The modern world, run by America which has corporal punishment, or the modern world like the UK, which has gone to an illegal war and has been involved in the killing of a couple hundred thousand people in Iraq at least, a war that was started off a lie and has made many MANY people in the "modern world" very rich indeed?

Yeah, how dare they kill a couple hundred people with their barbaric laws, join the west and kill magnitudes more people, not for misplaced beliefs in whats right, but for money..... much better :rolleyes:

For the record, the people who would beat this girl are awful human beings, but so are huge portions of the "modern" world and the ridiculous idea people have that their own society is better and more foreward thinking while their own governments commit basically murder, with their tax money, after being voted in, is laughable.

The thing is, your misplaced trust in the idea that our society does things right, is EXACTLY the belief the people over there have about their society and what they think about us over here, that we go to wars and kill people for our own benefit, which is what we do.

They beat an underage kid for having sex.... we happily let kids in other countries do back breaking labour to satisfy our want for material goods.... yeah, we're great over here, the modern world is basically perfect.

I love how you read my post and managed to discover from it that I hold either the UK or US up as beacons of culture or society, that I agree with the War in Afghanistan and every terrible act committed by my own government.

It's amazing how much you can read in a post a few dozen words long.
