Thoughts on Intel Upgrade (775 to 1155)

I'm wondering about treating my system to a bit of an upgrade.

Currently on a Q9550 C1 at 3.4Ghz, 8Gb, and an Asus P5Q Pro Turbo.

Having done a bit of reading, I'm considering going to a Z77 board, 8Gb and i7 2700k.

OR....

Do I go for an X79, i7 3820, and 8Gb? There's minimal price difference between the two setups, and whilst the 2700k seems to just pip the 3820 in most benchmarks, I'd be moving to a "current" socket...

Thoughts?

Oh, probably worth mentioning that I do some gaming, but also a fair bit of video transcoding. I've got a Prolimatech Megahalems so I'll have to get a new cooler either way since I won't fit either 1155 or 2011 sockets (considering going to a Corsair closed loop, or equivalent).

I would wait until Haswell is released in a couple of months, as the 1155 socket is going to be old news soon, and X79 is not going to be a big change if you use the 3820.

don't go 1155 it will be old tech very soon when haswell is released.

Hold off upgrades until then. Might be some nice price drops.

Most tech news sites are reporting that Haswell has been delayed until June, so you will have to wait an extra couple of months if you decide to go that route.

I would upgrade to any i7 asap :)

2700k 8320 3770k all great and would all be more than powerful enough to last you a few years.

Bit of a thread revival, but I'm thinking of making the jump to the 3820 in 5 weeks or so, and ahead of doing the obligatory motherboard research I was wondering what people would recommend on here?

Current upgrade list will be:

Processor - 3820?
Cooler - Cosair dual rad closed loop probably.
RAM - 8Gb
Mobo - ?
Monitor - Dell 2713HM

Not quite sure what I'll do with my Q9550 setup yet, might be a MM job to offset the cost a little bit.

in a similar situation to this so dont want to start a new thread but my current setup is Q8200 775 on gigabyte ds3 mobo with 4gb ddr 2 (crucial i think), just purchased a 2nd hand gigabyte z77 ds3h on the cheap and wondering which cpu to use that would give me more punch but also save on the pennies ?
ive been out of touch for a LONG time so not really clued up but probably looking at sandybridge cpu of some sort but need some advice with regards to performance / bang per buck
as for memory i think 2x4gb of some sort with an aim to overclock the setup so some suggestions on memory would be useful

Haswell already got pushed back to June. Who knows, it could face further delays. And dont forget what happened when sandybridge was first released (sata port problems). If you have patience then by all means wait. However if you have an ageing system that has trouble with gaming, etc, upgrade now to ivybridge and u wont regret it!

Seems lots of us Core2Quad guys are finally looking to upgrade :p

I really can't decide if I should go Ivybridge or wait for Haswell :(

I'm definitely considering it more and more, but it would surprise me if after researching and mulling it over I decide to stick with it a bit longer. I've been around PC's since my old Amstrad and GEM OS, but I haven't found any chip that's lasted as well as this Q9550 has, it's been absolutely fantastic (and still is, which is part of the dilemma!)

If you are running fine on your C2Q, then waiting for Haswell won't do you any harm. However, don't be a slave to the waiting game- after all we can always wait for something better so if you feel as thought you could get a worthy improvement to your game play for the cost to do so, then go for it :)

I'm in the same boat, still running a Q6600 G0 which I've had for about 5 years (at least probably), which is probably the best bit of cash I've ever spent on a PC before. Been seriously thinking about upgrading but I'm getting to the stage where I might aswell wait for Haswell. Q6600 still does everything I need it to and more so I'm in no rush, might aswell wait a couple of months and get the very latest tech.
