Which one would suit my sons PC ?

I've just got a bitfenix case was about £50 nice and cool for me. But then there's fans etc to buy.
I'd look at selling what you currently have and looking to the forums for maybe some good second hand gear. An i5 would be great I'd go with a 7950 graphics card you could get an 7870 for a good price too. A new CPU about 750w would be good too. No need for a 1200 they are over kill

Urmm...?

a 7850 2gb is plenty power,and a 600w is all you need

i run one of these cards on an i3 540 cpu and it plays just fine

Have you noticed everything is more power effecient though. GPU's wont be needing more power they will be needing less do "long term" still makes no sense.

500W from a decent PSU retailer like XFX or Antec is enough for any single GPU setup possibly bar a 480.

Not when he's under a tight budget.

The i3 is fine for now, sell it in the future and put the returns towards a 3570k, get the 7850 and overclock it, a new one PSU and cheap case and he'll be good to go. What resolution monitor is he using? Up to 1920x1080p is good for the 7850, any higher and it won't cut it.

Thats interesting. Cheers for this info.
I recon thats what he'll go for but he will definatly think about a cpu upgrade later on in the year.

I just recently bought him a new LED TV, 24" 1080p. His old TV went belly up.
I run an i5 3570K, got it for a good price from OCUK,really happy with it. Come November he will be 18 so there will be some cash to splash. As it were...
I recon he will lean towards a new chip and possibly the Corsair C70 he like the look of.
Unless he fancies driving lessons ???

One thing I have just been thinking about. May sound daft but how big are these top end GPU's ???

I have been measuring his case and it is exactly the same size has the
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-010-BX

He has eyed up this card
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-289-AS

I measured from the back of the case to the HDD and there is only 10.5" max of space.

I have just been to the Asus site and the dimension for that card are 10.2".
It would fit but only just. So with the dimensions of the new case compared to his existing case being the same I am guessing the internal dimensions would be very similar.

Is squeezing a large card in OK or not. His old case has has only space for one rear exhaust fan. The new case has space for two intake fans at the top,not looked but prpbebly 120mm..

The card which somebaody recomended
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-191-MS
is roughly 8".

This would fit better and I bet that's why it was recomended.

What differences is there in these two cards, apart from the length.

He does prefer the look of the Asus and at the mo is a good price.

I think thats why he was looking at the Corsair C70, it is a good size bigger all round.....

I would get a new PSU first never run a pc off a generic PSU there crap and cause all sorts of issues.

Get a PSU and then get a GPU even if ya cant run the pc for a month till ya get the funds for a GPU at least get a decent PSU first.

To update this thread.

My son saved up £85. Which was good for him.
He has not sold his 360, glad really cause I felt he would regret it.
He had his mind set on the Corsair Vengeance C70 in milatry green.

Just spent the last hour stripping down his PC and building it back up in it's new home.

Yep he now owns the C70. I put too and ordered it Monday evening and once again OCUK service is second to none.

Thanks OCUK :D

He knows the case does nowt but look good and it sure does look nice.

It does allow one thing though, a nice big 7850 will fit in without any worries.

I feel sure a new GPU and PSU and even a new CPU will be fitted.

Thanks for all the advice, help and tips. This will make great reference for future reading.

of course you could always use this opportunity to build yourself a new PC and give him your 'old' one! ;)

I am currently on with my own build.
I have just got myself an Asus Sabertooth Z77 with an i5 3570K slung in plus 8gig 1600 ram.
Powered by a Corsair TX 850 v2. Cooled by a Corsair H100.
All these bits housed in a Corsair Obsidian 800D..

My next item or items will be better hard drives,i may even go solid state but i aint thought too much about them. There is a new graphics card or me to buy also. I have to wait till funds are available.

I'm hoping all these bits will last me years. had my old LGA 775 or 6 years.

He can keep well away rom my bits...
