I have just done a series of tests to understand whether I can force PCIe GEN3

Results

PCIe2.0, no reg hack, GEN2 in bios selected - Valley score = 4707
PCIe3.0, reg hack, GN3 in bios selected - Valley score = 4715

Bull****. I am so disappointed.

How best do I test GPU bandwidth to see if I am running 8GT/s or 5GT/s?

Look in GPUz

The difference between 2.0 and 3.0 is very small even using a pair of GTX 690s

Trust me mate, I have. GPUz during test 1 said 2.0. In test 2, it said 3.0

Maybe it's Valley being a crappy benchmark for 3 x 680s?? I just feel deflated tbh

For a bit of fun I will run valley on my 690s in PCI-E 2.0 and 3.0 and post here, I think the difference will be quite small.

Thanks mate. Trying Heaven 3.0 and 4.0 now

I appreciate your help Kaapstad

Like Kaap says, PCI-E 2.0 isn't any different (very slight) to 3.0. I ran the 3DMark11 bench with SLI 680's and gained about 50 points total, which could be in the margin of error anyways.

3960X @5.0 to remove any bottleneck
2 x GTX 690s @stock 915/1502 both runs

Thanks mate
Just ran Heaven 4.0 and got 150 points more with GEN3... I guess I expected more.

Kaapstad, thanks for taking the time to do that. I owe you one

Why were you expecting more?

As long as you are not bandwidth starved in PCI-E 2.0 I see absolutely no reason why PCI-E 3.0 would represent anything more than minor gains, if any.
