Hi there,

I have a i7-3770k and am currently running Kingston HyperX 1600mhz RAM.
My friend won a competition and had his RAM replaced so now he has 16GB worth of 1866mhz available for me if I want it.

I know that my 3770k only supports a maximum of 1600mhz, but my motherboard, the Sabertooth Z77 supports 1866mhz.

I realise that the 'k' in the CPU name means I can overclock the speed of processor, but does it in any way mean that it also increases the ability of the processor to get the full potential of the 1866mhz?

Seems silly running 1866mhz with a 1600mhz compatible CPU, but if there is a way of boosting this then I'm interested as to how.

Regardless of whether anyone thinks its worth upgrading isn't entirely relevant, as I'm more curious about the science behind it and what works with what :)

As a side note, if it is possible to do this, does this in any way affect any current overclocking in place? Or is it in a separate area altogether?

Thankyou
Mark

you dont have to overclock the cpu to run 1866mhz,its fixed speeds due to limited bclk adjustment

youll see 1333,1600,1800,1866,2133,2200,2400+ mhz ect and you pick what speed your ram is

all overclocking is done through cpu multiplier and the bclk remains fixed so doesnt affect ram speeds

Thanks for reply Wazza.

But I'm assuming the speed would be downgraded? According to Intel and other sites, the 3770k supports 1333mhz and 1600mhz. It does not mention supporting 1866mhz, and so I assumed that regardless of the motherboard supporting 1866mhz, if the CPU doesn't, then it only operates it at 1600mhz.

Am i wrong?

thats just default speeds, the board should list much higher ram frequencies, you should run 1866mhz just fine

what board are you using? it should list the supported speeds on the motherboard spec page

So if its all possible then why don't they mention it in their specs :/ Why stop at 1600mhz?

Out of interest, what is the performance increase like between 1600 and 1866? How will it affect things from gaming to video rendering?

Confusing!! Thanks for your help guys,
Mark

i think they just list the default speeds, the board can run much higher than stated speeds

should improve framerates in games and speedup video rendering

Wow, straight to 2133. Is it stable?
I have a 3770K and 1866 RAM too, didn't realise the CPU didn't support it because if I remember correctly, the RAM said something like made for IvyBridge and this was the biggest baddest around.

I did have to RMA it a few times for errors in memtest86 but I don't think it's because the CPU didn't support it as increasing the DRAM Current Capability a notch fixed the errors.

Well why not, it's just a simple drop down change in BIOS :)

Yeah was gaming all day Saturday and a good few hours last night on BF3, so I'm sure I would've encountered crashes by now!

I've left all the clocks and voltages on default, but think XMP profile is running...can't be sure though.

I'm surprised your 3770k doesn't support it because I think it supports higher speeds than the 2600k!
