Virgin media put my cable package up by £2.84 in January. How does this leave me in terms of my 12 month contract with them (due in May).

I believe their T&Cs cover price increases somehow is that right?

How ironic they just followed that up with an email containing "we think you should be able to enjoy better value as standard. That means it won't cost you a penny more."

Reading said T&Cs will probably give you an answer that is far more accurate than any board member's Dorito-stained offer.

anyone who is with Virgin should phone up and say they want to cancel.
Instant money off your bill and, depending how long you are willing to stay on the phone and argue, lots of free stuff/extra broadband speed :D

Notifications informing of this increase went out to customers in December and January. If you didn't like it you could have cancelled then.

their cut off date for cancelling was at the start of January I think... you will have to wait till the 12 months is up. I forgot to call them until the end of Jan and it was too late.

Although I have to say I'm a little bit dubious about their practice of notifying customers via email instead of post.

in a year it went from 37 quid to 43 in my case - no change to the package bar the "free upgrade"

My bill had gone up to £47 due to various increases and 'free trials' which I forgot to cancel. On the phone for 15 minutes and now pay £30, plus broadband increased from 10mb to 30mb and a new hub thingy. could have held out for a free tivo box but don't really watch much TV so wasn't too bothered :D

As I recall, price increases within a specific percentage range are exempt from breach of contract, happened a few years back and had something to do with arguing that inflation affects businesses too, so they should be allowed to recoup that.

It was after the big exodus that Orange experienced when they changed pricing and lost a bucketload of cash.

If it ever happens with me then I am going to complain. My 30mb connection is virtually unusable at peak times due to the insane traffic management policy. It just slows to a crawl from the hours of 4pm-midnight every day. Online gaming is hopeless. Therefore, for them to impose a price increase is way out of order as I have a veyr dissatisfactory service from them.

I've moaned at them and they gave me a fix date of mid-April this year as my area was "suffering from high utilisation", so if it doesn't improve beyond this date, I may have to move ISP. Frustrating as hell.

Don't bother moaning to customer service though, mention cancelling and you will get put through to retentions who are the ones that can cut your bill or give you better services.

Call up, complain your ass off (in a constructive manor so that you get through to retentions) and in addition to not only keeping your current rate get an extra £2.50 off a month for 12 months and a free TiVo box.

That's what I did, but I had some leverage with the fact that my superhub kept bombing out, my phone line didn't work and new customers were getting TiVo boxes for free.

Just noticed this two days ago as well, when my bill came through.
On 12 month contract as well.

And got the same email as OP stating great value with no extra money.

Going to phone them up today, and ask for cancellation.
I've called 10 times so far, complaining about my direct debit not being setup, and every time being assured that it will be okay.
I'll bring that up and hope for a reduction on price, or I'll just cancel everything.

Yeah, done both. Got money off my monthly bill. But to be honest, its not money off my bill I wanted, it was a stable internet service.

set your own direct debit up on the website? might take about a week though before it shows up in your online banking under direct debits as they have to authorise it with your bank I believe

as soon as I mentioned the word cancel to someone in customer services she transferred me to retentions straight away

I've set it up twice through the website now, once through the post and I lost count on how many times over the phone.
