Road Cycling Essentials

back has been hurting since i did that long ride on Sunday

went to the Docs today and they tell me its going to take 4-6 weeks to fully heal, and they also said no cycling :(

If that's the case why would the ANT+ & Trainer road method be any more accurate than say Strava? They're basing it on the same data?

I need to buy some look delta cleats for bikes at the velodrome.

they come as 0 or 9 degrees. Which ones are better?

I've got a slight issue with my left foot wanting to turn in so i'm guessing 0 is not good so maybe 9?

Got a nice ride planned for tomorrow, going to take in some nice local hills, really nice scenery up there, probably about 40 miles. May swim before and run after however..

Loving biking again, I forgot how awesome it was after going to the gym for 4 months!

Rule 42 ;)

Seriously, have fun. 40 miles is a good length. I'll be doing about that much tomorrow.

AFAIK, TrainerRoad uses only the speed of the wheel compared against the known power curve of the turbo trainer.
Strava, etc, use speed with an estimate of weight, wind resistance, and other figures to estimate power.

Having said that, i'm not entirely convinced by the accuracy of my test today:

FTP: 385, i think that sounds a bit higher than it should be.

edit: this gives me an FTP/Kg value of 4.7, one of the guys who i ride with, and is around the same speed, has an FTP of 4.2. So, assuming i'm roughly similar, that would give me an actual FTP of 345. Damn this TrainerRoad, i thought this would negate the need to buy a powermeter...now i want one more than ever :(

Touch - what power meter are you using?

With trainer road, you're unlikely to get an exact power measurement, but some trainers like the kurt kinetic produce a very consistent, if not accurate power - so it might not be correct, but if you used the same tyre pressure/resistance on the trainer with a power meter, you should be able to deduce your real power figure.

So it's great for tracking improvement of power over time on trainer road, but I wouldn't really use the numbers to compare to those done with powertap or similar.

I dont have a power meter, just using my turbo (elite chrono mag) and a speed sensor.
I'm going to see if i can borrow a power meter to try and get a more accurate figure. It's not really that important though, as long as the figure is going up with training, it doesnt matter how far off the real figure it is.

Impressive work touch, I really need to push myself harder on my turbo to get the most out of it, I hit a heart rate of 180 out on the road but struggle to get 160 on the turbo - must push myself!

Can I get a link to your Trainerroad profile? Edit: Disregard, found you with my stalker skills.

Eeek! Worryingly, you found my profile faster than i could

I dont really have any trouble pushing hard on the turbo. I got up to 179bpm on that test today which is very close to the highest i'v seen. I think i got 181 in a race once.

The wife asked me, seriously I think, why I need so many pairs of bib shorts last night .

Could you refer to her shoe collection? :p

I regularly hit 190bpm and go over 200 when I am at my absolute maximum but I am both unfit and just under 30. The consistency of your [Rusty] heart rate is amazing compared to mine which is all over the place.
