My brother is wanting to upgrade from his laptop to a desktop, ideally wants something that can run cinema 4d and maya well and that can game pretty good for around £600, slightly over/slightly under is ok. Just the tower needed, no monitor, keyboard, mouse etc etc, he would also like an SSD if possible.

Seems like a good start, would need better than a 1GB GPU though as the monitor is 1080p, if it's not possible to keep it around £600 I'll just explain to him he needs to up his budget.

Does he play games in it?

EDIT: just re read your post sorry..

Demanding games?

Yeah he'd be playing some of the new titles.

you'll need an nvidia graphics card if you're going to use nvidia Physx in Maya (i'm not sure about cinema 4d). unfortunately, if you get a gaming card (anything up to gtx 690), the drivers will make sure to cut the performance in Maya (or 3ds Max) by about 2/3. i made that mistake, when i got the gtx 660Ti. Only professional cards will perform at full capacity. in theory, the professional cards and gaming cards are basically the same, with some differences, but the price is really determined by the drivers (nvidia spends ages and loads of money on the drivers for professional cards). you could, although i don't advise it, buy a gaming card and get somebody to hack the firmware, so Maya thinks it's a professional card. i've neard this boosts performance drastically, but again i don't advise it, partly because if it goes wrong, you've buggered up the card completely, but also because it's more than likely going to be classed as illegal...

So in short, if your brother uses nvidia Physx in Maya, don't buy ATI. if not, then it's probably fine :)

Zakk makes a good point but there's a problem. There is no good NVIDIA card for that price, the 660 is lowest id go and that's still pricier. If it fits into the budget though, that's your best bet.
