You just need 10,000 signatures on a petition. Now where could you get 10,000 signatures quickly..? :p

Just "a" pope? Not "the" Pope?

You could always check if pope is a restricted title in the way that some titles for achievements or honourifics are. If it isn't then it might be you can call yourself a pope right away. Of course you won't be spiritual leader for the Catholics but whether that's a deal-breaker or not depends on why you desire to be a pope.

If you were seriously interested then you'd need to become a priest, rise through the ranks of the clergy until you became a cardinal, devote your life to good works, probably doing a spot of service in the Vatican itself would help your cause. It would probably also help if you're good at dealing with people and can network there to advance your cause, having powerful friends and allies rarely hurts your cause. If you can speak a number of languages including Latin then that will also aid you.

I think peer respect has a lot to do with it. You have to be seen to be smart, committed, respected etc. to climb the rungs.

Look at our new Arch Bishop of Canterbury. He's climbed the greasy pole very quickly, moving from oil industry exec to Arch Bish in 21 years, he was only Ordinated in 1992.

That's it really... its not just putting in the effort and being smart but its being seen too. Face time with the right people, being seen to be a good egg, being visibly productive and networking etc... You'd likely have to exhibit the same generic 'leadership' traits required in any other sector/industry.

New Arch Bishop went to Eton and had a successful career prior to joining the Church... he'd have been acting out those various 'leadership' traits out of habit as he'd had an education where the right sort of behaviour is drummed into him (its almost taken as a given by people at that school that they're going to be successful in life so they tend to behave as though they already are and it doesn't seem to harm them). He's had time to put it into practice and assert himself in the oil industry and presumably he happened to join the Church in a role where he was seen by the right people...

It's probably been said but I'll say it anyway...

Learn to love dresses, learn how to kiddy fiddle, be old and be out of touch. Tick them boxes and you're in with a shout.

i think with the catholic church you also need to be secretly gay but openly be very anti gay.

a kiddie fiddling, bigoted hypocrite (with possibly nazi leanings) would be your best bet

Same as most organisations. Think of it all as political (kiss the right backsides/promise the right people what they want) and you are in.

I would almost guarantee the pope is never the one that holds the power. Its the shady buggers in the background.

Kill the old Pope, Plant a bomb somewhere in the Vatican, set up an elaborate back story of an old enemy returning, then "find" the bomb with moments to spare, fly it a few thousand feet up in a helicopter, bail out and hope the blast doesn't kill you. And hope no footage has been recorded of you confessing to your dastardly deeds.:p
