I've just put a deposit on an Evo 9 and not only would it break my wallet putting that sort of mileage on it it would feel completely wrong. So my plan is to sell the ATR and use whatever cash I get to buy a new (diesel) commuting car. Due to having the Evo I don't really need anything sporty or flash so I'm just after a reliable and economical work horse. I've thought about the Golf mk4 TDI or similar perhaps?

Buying a 2k diesel could be a bit risky, as it will be 2k because its old or rundown. And a diesel going wrong will soon wipe out any savings you make from the higher MPG

At that budget though, I'm pretty sure you'd get a decent Focus and have money for a slush fund should it go wrong.

I wouldn't even bother with a Golf. Get yourself a Toyota Yaris D4D/Pug 306HDI? Even a Yaris petrol will be decent on fuel. The interior sucks but the MPG's are fine. Low running costs too which is what you want if you're also running a Evo.

If you want it for commuting why spend £2-3k? I can understand that you'll be driving it a lot and want to be in a nice place but I don't think it's worth it.

I'd try and find something with the 1.9TDI VW engine. Bora? Passat? Something undesirable like a Seat Cordoba?

This is the engine which I'm interested in. I also like mk 4 Golfs, always fancied one. Focus is also a good shout, would the 1.8 petrol do 40mpg though?

It sounds like you want a PD130 Golf, in which case - go buy one :p

Don't write off the Bora though, given it's the same car but with a boot glued on the back and often cheaper due to being less desirable.

according to WBAC mine is worth about 3k, but not for sale :)

04 plate and 70k miles still gets 60mpg plus on 60 mile round trip

So what's so bad about a 2 grand derv then, something like the PD130 engine? What fails on them? I've been told that they're pretty bullet proof if looked after.

I'm going through the same thought process with a 52m each way potential commute. Think my S40 T5 will just cost too much.

They are and you'll be paying a premium for a Golf. See what toledos or jettas are about?

In reply to what goes wrong in them, the main thing is the clutch/dual mass flywheel but parts aren't too bad cost wise, the one on my polo cost £550 all in to replace. Front suspension components are a weak point on the polos and I think they can be a bit of a pain on the golfs too, apart from that they're good cars really if serviced properly. Get one with a full service history preferably with some kind of VW specialist or even better a dealer (doubt you'll get one at this price) and the engine will be fine. The PD150 can have issues with the camshaft so id avoid those.

Rubbish, if you're not worried about what car you have get a mk4 astra 1.7tdi, solid engine, very good mpg 60+ depending on how you drive, comfortable enough and if you get an estate plenty of space, you can get a decent one for £1500

My 2000 Bora has just had clutch and DMF. Cost was around £500.

It now however, is showing signs of camshaft wear. This is a pd115 model, with 90k on the clock and full Volkswagen service history.

False economy imo but you might get lucky. My friend has a tdi 100 remapped to 140 with 160k on the clock and no problems!
