Strange graphics problem

Sup guys.

Last month I bought a used monitor to finally game at 1080. A few days after the purchase my 7870 started to screw up.

I started receiving artifacts on Chrome and Skype. It was fine during games expect for one time where it crashed, but it played every game smoothly after that.
Later the artifacts became more frequent and annoying therefore I returned the 7870.

During the RMA process which was around the week I used my on board graphics and had NO problems what so ever.

2 weeks later I purchased a 7870 XT. A DAY after it started to have the same problem. Luckily no crashes yet but, I still have random flickering and artifacts all over the place.

By the way I've tried both slots on the motherboard and it's still flickering.
Also the flickering and artifacts affects both screens. Not just the "new" one.

Also updated the catalyst software to 13.2 from 13.1. The artifacts have stopped (for now) but the flickering has gotten a little worse.

Could this just be my luck with graphics cards? The motherboard messing up? Not enough power going to the graphics card? The monitors fault (very unlikely)?

Sorry for the essay :)

Brilliant name :D.

You'll need to provide a bit more information. CPU, motherboard, RAM and PSU would be helpful. Also if any parts are overclocked and if so, what settings you are using for your overclocks etc. If I'm not around tomorrow then some other useful forum lurker will be here to advise after you have given us more information.

LtMatt is really helpful and has a good base of knowledge when it comes to 6 and 7 series AMD. If he graces you with his presence, your problem/s will be identified or cured :).

Corsair Veng 8GB
Asus P8Z68-V LX (motherboard)
WD Blue 500GB
OCZ Vertex 2 60GB
OCZ 550W ZS (Bronze)

The CPU is overclocked to 4.4GHz but it only occurs when I'm using handbrake. 95% of the time the clock is limited to around 2GHz.
I did have a problem with the CPU socket a while ago but it's been fixed properly and has had no issues since.

None of the components overheat as well. Everything is perfectly cool.

Thanks for the reply ;)

SO should I RMA it?

No problem, I'm not much help but I try lol :).

I've never used Handbrake so I'm not going to be able to advise too well on that part. I would however try a few things before returning the card. Try and either up your voltage for your CPU overclock or reduce the overclock and test again (quick way to do that is to save your overclock profile and then revert to default in BIOS). Try updating your BIOS for your motherboard (instructions will be in your manual or on the manufacturer website). If both of these come back with negative results, my last attempt would be to try the 7870XT in another system to see if the problem persists.

Trying in another system is usually the quickest way to expose something but not everyone has that option. It does sound to me like it's system instability somewhere though.

If someone else has been using Handbrake at OCUK I hope they can shed more light on this. As I've never used it and barely heard of it, I don't have a clue what problems can be encountered with system stability, drivers etc. If you're determined to keep the card and figure this problem out then I'd hold of doing the RMA until it's solved. That is up to you though :).

Well since I've made this thread, it's only flickered ONLY once.
If it only flickers once in a while then I'll keep it :)

"try the 7870XT in another system to see if the problem persists."
Well that seems to be the most logical thing to do. I'll try it out tomorrow.
I know the previous 7870 was dodge because OCUK tested it and came to a conclusion that it was faulty.
Hopefully that's not the same issue this time.

Thanks again.
