right im gettin fed up of running out of vram in skyrim and some other games.

how much of an upgrade is a 7970 over my 570 sli?
i am gaming at 2560 x 1440

help me please

If it's a vram limit then the upgrade should fly in comparison, generally when you max vram your frames tank big time. Can't say if the raw performance will be the same/better but that's a little moot anyway if vram is an issue.

An overclocked 7970 is possibly on par with SLI570s/CF6970s, so in terms of actual grunt you're about the same but the boost through not being VRAM limited would be immense.

Once overclocked you should find the 7970 faster and smoother. I found the same coming from 6950 xfire. I find on a well clocked 7970 i can run all the games i currently play at maximum settings @1440p and maintain solid and smooth fps. However you will need to disable or knock AA down a tad.

Games ive tested and settings used.

BF3:Highest details+2xAA
Sleeping Dogs:Highest details+SSAA=High
Dirt Showdown:Highest details+MSAAx4
Hitman:Highest Details+AA disabled (not played this game much yet so might be able to use some AA)
Farcry3:Highest details+AA disabled

I currently I'm play on Skyrim with loads of mods I'm frequently goin up to 1280mb on vram stutters and constant slow downs I was looking at the xfx 7970 ghz edition with has 3 gig vram should give me a bit more to play with

Been playing around with Skyrim mods and all was good until I installed the Texture Pack Combiner, some stuttering started.

Low and behold I fired up Afterburner and was shocked to see my Vram usage sitting @3995Mb@1080p which of course is 1997Mb each gpu.

The cards in question are 6950>70 CrossFire running 950MHz/1300MHz, these are plenty fast at anything I have thrown at them@1080p, including Skyrim until the texture pack combiner was installed.

I swapped in a 7970 Wind Force and fired up Skyrim again, no stuttering but the vram is now hitting ~2750Mb.

As imo, the 7970 I used is slower than my CrossFire setup@1080p, it's definitely not gpu grunt at fault, they ran out of Vram!

At this point I should add that this is all being done in 3D via Tridef.

Mods used along with the Texture Combiner(and required files) are:

Not advocating/advising anyone rips out gpu's to replace a 2Gb gpu at all for 1080p gaming, the aim of the post is to be informative and let anyone know that a modded Skyrim can breach 2Gb vram@1080p.

Texture Combiner available here:

MSI are good but lots of problems with over heating cards. Personaly, I would go for the Gigabyte WFX3. Not sure if you are fussed about the volts being locked but if you are, someone can advise better on that.
