Hugo Chavez has died

Well he is an enemy of the United States so is portrayed as a bad guy I suppose yeh. He does enjoy popular support in Venezuela though.

I wouldn't really say that.

He suppresses the opposition so well that he cannot help but have good support.

It's never nice to wish a man dead but it should hopefully do the region as a whole some good, though equally it could descend into civil war and the rest.

He has some pretty mad views, but he has done a lot for the country and South America.

Wouldn't be surprised if he actually died a couple of days ago giving the government a chance to put the country on lock down.

Well he did win the election last year with 55% of the vote.

He opposes their foreign policy and he is friendly with the Iranians.

Is there any actual evidence of his suppression of the opposition?

Plenty.

Whilst I am sure someone will say you cannot trust media outlets, thus making it impossible to prove any point, the Economist tends to be relatively unbiased and the reports in there around election time are pretty shocking about vote rigging, threats of violence against opposition amongst other things.

He was not a nice chap, typical communist dictator.
