Hugo Chavez has died

Fair enough.
Plenty.

Whilst I am sure someone will say you cannot trust media outlets, thus making it impossible to prove any point, the Economist tends to be relatively unbiased and the reports in there around election time are pretty shocking about vote rigging, threats of violence against opposition amongst other things.

He was not a nice chap, typical communist dictator.

In fairness having just read the amnesty link it does seem that he abused his power. Probably for the best that he is gone it would seem.

This is an interesting article about Chavez : http://www.independent.co.uk/voices...nt-that-says-no-to-neoliberalism-8202738.html

58- that's young. I feel saddened by a man dying relatively young, but relieved that a dictator has gone.

He was barely in power longer than Thatcher, I don't get how you can be so brainwashed by US orientated media. The guy was a socialist who nationalised stuff, took money away from the rich and provided the poor with health care/ free education etc etc, it's exactly the opposite of why our current government is hated by a lot of people.

Interesting and whilst the points he makes on the surface are correct that yes the media is "independant" and yes the country has a large turnout and poor people vote.

It seems a Chavez favoured peice considering that those who vote are bussed by pro-Chavez supporters to vote in stations that independant observers saw had vote cards with one option on (guess who) and that of course media can produce anti-Chavez "vitrol" but it is as closely controlled as in China and is more so vitrolic against his opponents. I vaguely remember reading that in the last election the media spent most of it's air time calling the challenger a scummy peado. I paraphrase but that was the gist if I am not getting mistaken with another "democracy"

The guy did do some good but he was a dictator and was ruthless in keeping the power regardless of the cost. I think you need to weigh up individual freedom and liberty against progress of sorts for many people and decide which is more beneficial as to how you ultimately judge him.

But has he waged war in foreign lands?

Has he covertly armed and trained opposition forces in Libya and Syria?

Hasn't he been funding and arming the guerillas in Columbia to undermine their regime?

Pretty sure he has but I would need to read up again as it has been a while.
