Overall, as far as south american dictatorships go, he could not hold a candle to Pinochet. 6 / 10 for me.

Great man, probably the most popular leader of all time.
Sadly missed.
This doesn't mean he was a good person though, he was hardly a picture of sanity from what I can see.

He got worse with age, for sure. As did his popularity.
It seemed to me as if you were praising him purely because he didn't 'bow down to America'...
It'd be much easier if some countries did, then we wouldn't have issues with the nutters in Iran, etc.

I was say that America has killed innocent children.
There's a difference between doing it by mistake in a war situation and actively supporting it, though.

If they are in the vicinity of something of importance and that thing is of significant importance then yes they do support it and actually code it into their algorithms for strikes. Lesser evil and all that.
It's not a mistake when they do it they run the numbers and do it.

I can't decide how I feel about this. I don't really know enough about Chavez to comment.
My general understanding (a quick wiki later - doubtful source, but oh well, gives an overview), seems to suggest that his biggest issue with human rights is surpressing politcal freedom.
Now let's be honest, this isn't a good thing, but also, it's also, unfortunately, not uncommon.
On the other hand the Human Rights Watch have suggested he has done good things for both women's and indigenous rights. The report itself actually got some opposition from Latin American Scholars, but I have no idea how many of them may have been pressured by Chavez.
I suspect being an opponent of the United States, some of the information we've received on him from media may be slightly biased as well.
I'm sure plenty of news broadcasters will do eulogy's. I'll take a look at them and see what I think of him.
