As above really . I'm researching a gpu upgrade namely a HIS 7970 iceQ x2 or 7950 iceQ x2 boost . Is the extra £50 ish worth it . From most info i can find most say go for the 7950 as the 7970 is more a fanboy card , and is just a cherry picked chip ? No idea on that front so I thought I would ask some people in the no .

woah woah
usually it's £240 for a (good) custom cooled 7950 and £300 for a stock 7970. in normal scenarios the 7970 is £80-100 more expensive if they have equivalently good coolers.

actually in your case you've picked quite an expensive 7950, which makes your choice of 7970 very attractive. but again it's only because you've picked such an expensive 7950... any reason you picked that one?

As above, not worth it, if it won't run on a 50, it won't run on a 70, especially when you put them clock for clock.

The 70 isn't a fanboi card either, if your into benchmarking or looking for the absolute max performance available on high res multi screen gaming, then that's what you would go for, unless of course you have deep enough pockets for the mighty Titan.;)

Tbh, that 7950 is expensive here.

that's true but the guy said £50, so he must be looking to buy here. honestly i think of the two choices the 7970 makes more sense, if only because that particular 7950 is really expensive.

edit: i notice the difference is £40 not £50... maybe it's a different retailer...

Mainly for looks to be honest . Also the cooler is meant to be pretty good and really quiet . My other AMD choice is the Sapphire vapour x , also a pretty pricey card . On the other hand the Nvidia card I have looked into is the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 680 WindForce it has always given me a very pleasing feeling in the trouser area until I see the $50 price tag .

I am just in the early stages of looking at the mo , it could be as long as the end of the year and wait for the 8xxx to be launched . I've got a Sapphire hd 7850 and am very pleased with what the little beast can pull off . It has got to be the best £150 I have spent on my rig . It handles anything I can throw at it , and with great temps .

fair enough on the looks and noise i guess. though you know there's a 7950 windforce for £240 at the moment?

but stick with the 7850 until the next series, maybe? it's capable (and does everything you want apparently) and if you feel like you could wait it seems pertinent to see what next gen has to offer.
