UEFA Champions League/Europa League 5/6/7 March *** Spoilers ***

I didn't understand his selection and Rooney's omission. I think Welbeck did a good job defensively against Madrid but I didn't think he did very well offensively, other than running a bit quicker than the Real defenders. I didn't see him do anything that Rooney couldn't have done and Rooney offers more attacking options imho, he's a more dynamic player.

Exactly the reason as you said. Welbeck is quicker and can run the channels better so when it comes to the counter attack which United were set up for, he's the better choice.

Argh well, the only tinyyyy consolation was I captained Ronaldo in my fantasy team. Felt so sick last night. Still believe that was one of the worse decisions in the history of the Champions League. Yes I'm most likely biased but what away to ruin the game of the year.

Except he's so limited on the ball he won't do anything with it?

Welbeck marked Alonso out of the game! he man marked him the full game and as soon as Nani was sent off. It all went down hill when the 2 RM midfielders(Alonso and Modric) started to receive the ball, where able to pick passes and out play Man U.

I don't think Rooney could have stuck to the defensive task in marking alonso all game in the way Welbeck did.

He was obviously there to help with the counter with his pace. But even if not, and Ferguson just chose him when he really shouldn't have - Does that mean Welbeck is terrible? No, it means Ferguson chose the wrong player. I'm not going to try and say Welbeck is as good as Rooney, because the whole world can see that isn't true, that doesn't however mean that Welbeck is useless because he gets picked ahead of him.

I guess when you play real Madrid you need your best players onboard and I know welbeck scored a dexebt goal in the first leg but still..

Out of all the best players, who scored your goals against Real?

Exactly.

I think, as Rooney showed in the first leg, he can do the defensive work well. So, I disagree on that. I've already commented about how Real won the game earlier on.

Exactly.

I've not said Welbeck is terrible, I just do not understand the logic of picking someone who's less effective offensively when there is very little difference defensively. United needed to win the game, I could have understood Welbeck as a sub, to stretch the game with pace but not as a starter.

I didn't say you did, but there is so much ****ging Welbeck off on this forum, almost always coming from the Man Utd fans. And lets not forget, over the 2 legs, he is the only Man Utd player to score against Real.

Welbeck is not a great player.

He's solid and do a decent job for mid table team or a ManU Carling Cup run but he isn't good enough for the Champ League. He's a poor finisher, has a poor touch, yes he'll run around a bit but that's hardly a huge quality. Rooney could have offered that but with a better end product.

That's the crux of it. RVP has been off form, gigs had a chance to score but unfathomably tried to take the keeper on.

Welbeck could have had 3 goals over the two legs had he not been a lesser talented striker.

United didn't need to win the game though. All they had to do was stop Real Scoring?

No, but unlike other clubs in Europe, Manchester United play ambitious football and aren't really suited to playing defensive from the off. It just wouldn't suit them, their players, their ethos, style or history, or manager.

Scoring doesn't make him exempt from criticism.

Also; English football fans should be happy, Arsenal are still in the Champions league :D annnd also, according to Chiles, Celtic are an English side still in.

Not sure if this has yet been posted? http://www.fifa.com/mm/document/afdeveloping/refereeing/law_12_fouls_misconduct_en_47379.pdf

Slides 26-28. That sort of dangerous play should only be a sending off if it denied a clear goalscoring opportunity, or if there was intent to injure.

Intent isn't mentioned.

Slide 8/9, referee obviously decided it was excessive due to the pace he was travelling at going into the challenge although I'm fairly sure Nani was not aware of Arbeloa's presence it was still a challenge for the ball whether he liked it or not.

I can easily see why the ref sent him off, not that I agree with it.

We don't even need a football forum. Whenever anything happens that might be worthy of comment or discussion we should just 'get over it' instead.
